Some of the increased demand at grocery stores is caused by the closing of restaurants. Wholesale restaurant supply companies like Sysco are sitting with unused inventory and a huge distribution and supply chain resources. Perhaps the government could temporarily remove the retail labeling requirements and allow their inventory to be sold in grocery stores.

It was in plain shrinkwrapped freezer packaging.

(10,023 posts)We sometimes get bulk overruns at our food pantry. The packages are so huge we need to divide them into smaller units.

(13,594 posts)I can usually get the big food service can of chili beans for my homemade chili there though. I can't think of much of anything else like that I would use, because my diet has very little canned anything. I imagine some people could go through quite a few items if the price was good.

(37,160 posts)Last weekend the bread aisle of my nearby grocery was wiped clean. On Tuesday it was half full, but not of the usual brands. The loaf I got was marked "for food service only".

When I worked food service I'd buy some large packages of stuff. And I've seen it for sale at the local restaurant supply companies, but it's stuff that the vendors want to sell that way and that the stores want to stock. (You sponsor student clubs selling food at special events, it helps to have worked food service.)

It could be donated. Or they could hold onto it and use it later, provided it hasn't gone too fast past its expiration date.

(50,559 posts)On a lot of that stuff, the problem isn't the labeling. It's that the packages are outrageous in size. Say you want a small bottle of salad oil. If you go to the grocery store, a small bottle holds less than a quart. A small bottle in a restaurant supply store is a gallon. Flour comes in 50-pound bags. Sugar is in 25-pound bags. Most people would never use that much.

Working food service can make you stop liking food.

Good idea though
