Social Distancing as It Is Working in Minnesota

I had to venture out this morning to buy food and pet supplies. I left my home at 9 AM. The roads are almost empty of cars on this Sunday morning. I went to a nearby farm supply store to buy the pet supplies. The parking lot there was the least crowded I have ever seen. They had what I needed, but I did notice that their home paper goods aisle was empty of products. People in the store were carefully avoiding close encounters with others. The clerk at the checkout counter was wearing blue gloves and asked whether I wanted the receipt. I declined, and touched nothing. I sanitized my shopping cart on entering and my hands after loading the bags into my car.

Then, I went to the supermarket. Again, the parking lot was uncrowded, letting me park closer than usual to the store. The shopping cart area had an ample supply of disinfectant wipes for the cart handles, so I saved the one I had taken in with me. The shelves were better stocked than the last time I went there, although paper products like towels and TP were still not available. I found everything I went there for, though. There were no lines at the checkout aisles, and checkers were wearing blue gloves there, too. Workers stocking the shelves were also wearing blue gloves, for whatever value that has. The clerk used a wand to scan my loyalty card at a distance, and asked if I wanted the receipt. I declined. The store was uncrowded, and people were being careful to avoid close contact throughout the store. I sanitized my hands with Purell after loading bags into the car, and before entering the car or handling my keys.

In both stores, I consciously avoided touching my face at all times.

At home, I unpacked everything and put it all away without touching my face, and then scrubbed my hands with soap and hot water for the prescribed time.

Minnesotans are paying attention to the guidelines. Store employees, too, are being careful. That's the bottom line of my experience today. People are buying what they need, but doing so very carefully. That's a good thing.

2. Great precautions

Can I suggest one addition that might be feasible depending on the layout of your home: change your clothes outside the house (IF THAT IS POSSIBLE) and leave them in a basket for awhile and then wash. Also, leave your shoes outside.

I've gone out to the grocery store once since the Bay Area lockdown began. As soon as I came home, I changed clothes in the garage and left the shoes I wore outside.

I fully appreciate that this might not work for everyone, but I think clothes and shoes need to be part of the process.

clothing after such a shopping trip. I cannot see where my clothing would have become contaminated, frankly.

3. Went out for a few necessities yesterday evening to one of our major grocery stores.

There were fewer cars and people. Shelves were stocked in every dept although quantity limitations were clearly posted. The only major difference we noticed, besides the few individuals wearing masks, was only the self checkout lines were open....all the rest were roped off.

following the guidelines here in SW New Mexico. From a friend in the southeast part of the state, apparently people aren’t social distancing at all. Surprise, surprise, that’s the most right wing part of our state.

I rode my bike and trailer because I expected the lot to be packed. I got there 20 minutes before opening time. Line stretched clear around to the back of the store. Deceptive since everyone was keeping a 6-10 foot distance. They had lists posted of items that weren’t available. Line went quickly and inside the store it was very orderly. “Limit 1 item” signs were everywhere you’d expect. Strictly enforced at the checkout. No paper goods, canned beans, bleach, Clorox wipes. Everything else seemed to be available. I’d been out of town for a couple weeks and ate all the perishables before I left. $245 later, I’m set now for 2-3 weeks.

7. We've been avoiding Costco, because everyone knows that

Costco has stuff in quantity. Hence the long lines.

I've chosen the stores I visit based on their locations. So far, I've not encountered any crowds at all.

And since they were restricting entry, it wasn’t crowded inside so you could maintain distance. Checkout lines were short. I was surprised to see rice available. I was almost out so the 20 pound bag of basmati was my prize purchase.

Rachel showed how bright red Florida was with unusual readouts from a certain kind of thermometer. I wasn't surprised since I saw a post a week or two ago about a 10,000 person Baptist service being defiantly held. And today there was a post of a three seating revival going on near the DUer's town. I'll now keep watch on Minnesota. Massachusetts has moved from 5th in the country to 11th. I'm hoping that's because of early measures (not sure when they started as we two old people have been staying at home for weeks) or lack of testing swabs. We'll see.

That may well be reason for optimism. Our numbers are going up, but slowly so far.

10. I was at the local store at 7 a.m. this morning when it opened

I was the only customer in the place. After that, I went to the small house to check things out, then it was to the Dollar General where I sat in the parking lot for 10 minutes before it opened at 8. I was the only customer there too.

There was some tp on the shelves at both stores but still no hand sanitizer or disinfectant wipes. The bread shelves were mostly empty too but there was ample supplies of dairy products, eggs, meat, and poultry.

Last week, at around the same time on Sunday, all of those areas were empty.

I remain puzzled at the TP shortage, though. It will be back, but when is unclear.
