On Tuesday, I spoke with Daniel Horn, a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is leading a team preparing his institution for an influx of coronavirus patients. In our last interview, on Sunday, Horn was anxious that his broader community hadnt yet adopted social distancing. That policy is now firmly in place, but a new set of problems is looming.
Franklin Foer: Are you carrying any new worries since we spoke on Sunday?
Daniel Horn: At this point, there is really growing concern about the safety of health-care workers. We are already seeing clusters of health-care workers having to take time off of work while they are tested or awaiting test results.
Franklin Foer: A frontline physician speaks out on the coronavirus
Foer: Lets just pause there. When does a health-care worker have to go out of commission?
Horn: Every institution is working through this. I think the simplest way to think about this is, today in the United States, if you are a health-care worker and you develop any upper-respiratory symptomscough, sore throat, snifflesyoure going to be out of work for some period of time. That really puts us at risk of losing large swaths of the health-care workforce before the escalation of cases really comes

(35,320 posts)Should be shipped in some numbers by late this week. That'll cut down on some staffing issues, but only a few.
If you're suffering from any respiratory illness you shouldn't be around anybody suspected of having COVID, even if 3/4 of the NY COVID tests come back negative. Comorbidity is a bad, bad thing and if you have COVID + cold or flu you might die even if having COVID solo wouldn't be a problem.

(58,785 posts)happens when epidemic disease becomes pandemic. Many people have extensive expertise in understanding, preventing and controlling pandemics.
Outside epidemiology itself is another level of experts: in government policy related to disease. Senator Richard Burr used to be chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Bioterrorism and Public Health Preparedness. Back in 2005 he was a leader in creating biodefense legislation to stop epidemic disease and develop vaccines and other drugs to combat it.
In 2020 Burr KNEW very well what would happen if he and other Republican leaders did nothing and COVID-19 became pandemic in the U.S. So he sold his holdings in industries that would be devastated AND he continued to reassure the nation that COVID was no big deal, instrumental in creating a nearly 3-month delay in awareness and action while it swept silently across the nation.
