I am SO glad I went to Maui when I did.

14-day quarantine to begin Thursday for arrivals to Hawaii

By Timothy Hurley Today

In the state’s toughest measure yet in battling the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. David Ige on Saturday ordered residents and visitors returning to Hawaii to undergo a 14-day quarantine starting Thursday.

The mandate — a first of its kind in the nation — represents the final blow in temporarily sucking the life out of Hawaii’s tourism industry, the economic lifeblood of the state.

But Ige, who stood alongside travel and visitor industry leaders at a state Capitol news conference, insisted it was essential to safeguard the greater population.

“We need to come together as a community to fight this virus,” Ige declared. “We want this action to send the message to visitors and residents alike that we appreciate their love for Hawaii, but we are asking them to postpone their visit.”

In addition, the mayors of Maui and Kauai on Saturday announced new emergency social distancing measures aimed at limiting the coronavirus, including the closing of bars, nightclubs, theaters and tourist attractions.

What a bummer to land in Hawaii only to be quarantined. I hope folks have travel insurance. I would've been up shit creek without a paddle because I booked a specific condo unit at Napili Point and I would've been SOL if I'd had to cancel because the arrangement was with the condo owner, not the property, therefore no guarantees. I would hope they'd be flexible, but the wouldn't have to be. I understand that they need to do it to try to stem the virus, but I just feel bad for all of the workers who will lose their jobs over this. There was a woman who cleaned our unit every day who was so awesome. She welcomed me so warmly the day I arrived. She was walking by as I was enjoying the sunrise on my lanai and we got to chatting. She's been working there for 22 years and I remembered her from my last visit. I'm glad I left her very large tips every day because she's going to need it. She looks like she should've retired 10 years ago, but she's still working. She's so sweet; I worry about her.
