(8,090 posts)from any neighbors I run in to along the way. Went to the grocery store Friday night and it grossed me out to no end since people were not keeping a safe distance, so I'm making do with whatever I've "stockpiled"... enough for about 2 months. I work from home so I'm kind of used to not being around people much of the week.

(8,090 posts)but it is what it is! I would love to support local businesses and do carryout but I'm not convinced everyone is taking this as seriously as they need to be.

(102,292 posts)I work in health care and I take every damned precaution available to me at work. Only a small portion of my work can be done from home. I had the better part of this last week and weekend off due to a previously scheduled and canceled conference, so it has been a bit more flexible.
When I am not at work, I totally isolate--mainly because I am too exhausted to even think of doing anything else and the empty shelved on Sam's or grocery store trips have demoralized me. I have a few weeks' worth of food and supplies and I eat boring repetitive meals that I batch cook/freeze or prepare in minutes. Lots of steamed frozen veggies and the homemade yogurt I make twice a week with peanut butter or frozen fruit. Boring, but digestible. I spend a few minutes every day trying to order some things online. Most days, I come up short and even if the order is accepted, they frequently confirm then email you five days later that your order has been canceled (out of stock).
I walk 3-5 miles on an urban trail that has largely cleared out, so I don't have to worry so much about people wanting to meet and greet my pup or even chitchat. I did walk my dog with a friend and her dog, but she's now in quarantine and has major risk factors for COVID-19. So, even if she fully recovers as I hope, she may no longer feel up to joining us on the trail.

(62,444 posts)We have open space nearby and go for walks, but haven't been anywhere or had any visitors.
Anytime we think of some reason to go out, it comes down to the difference between "want" and "need", and we never seem to have crossed the threshold of "need".

I worry about my family and anyone who came in contact with me before I learned of the exposure.

(9,651 posts)But relatively easy for someone who lives alone, which is me. Neighbors have done shopping for me because I am without a car at present. Just now making a list to order a delivery from Smart & Final. I don't work anymore.
I couldn't be in a better situation during this crisis.
Total dumb luck.

Really tough, because my father in law died yesterday, and I can't leave the house and be with the rest of the family.
But, right now I'm at risk of giving others the flu or catching COVID-19 while my immune system is compromised.
Yes, I had my flu shot.
That's why I have a mild case.

Everyone is still going to the grocery stores, still touching everything, and still spreading the virus - and this is in Ohio where the state is supposed to be on lockdown.

(36,312 posts)Our contact with others is pretty much limited to immediate family. Mainly my father-in-law who stops by every day for a few hours to visit. He's 80 years old and lost his wife a little over a month ago. Her cremated remains keep me company here in the office.
I've been trying to get my wife to practice social distancing with the family who come over, especially her father, but so far, it's a no go.

(7,300 posts)Apparently plastic recycling is a critical business in Missouri. I watch people standing right next to each other, others not washing their hands or coughing and sneezing without covering themselves and then washing their hands. Luckily I work around plastic and metal and so the virus only lives a week on those those surfaces. We're fucked.

(31,392 posts)that needs to be walked 3-4 times/day. I live in Wake County, NC where there are now 52 cases, the second most in the state.
More than 50% of the time we are alone in the elevator going up or down. Not always. I won't get on an elevator with more than one other person on it if possible so we can stay in opposite corners. I cross the street if I see someone coming in the middle of the sidewalk who looks like they have no intention of moving over.
I flew home from Bonaire (in the Caribbean where they still do not have a single case of coronavirus) on March 9th. Tomorrow will be 14 days since I was in an airport. No symptoms so far. The week I came home I went to the grocery store and spent $300. on food and supplies. I went to the library and got a dozen books. I went to the drug store and picked up my asthma prescription refill. It was in the drug store where I came closest to having someone cough within 2 feet of me. Clueless woman.
Last Friday I went to the 7-8 am hour for seniors at the Dollar General which is one block from my apartment to pick up a few things. Nobody but people stocking in the store, no line at the cashier, no coughing. In and out in less than 10 minutes.
My freezer and pantry are pretty full. I probably won't go in a store again for supplies for at least a week, maybe longer.

(34,111 posts)while taking care of the farm animals. I have only my husband and my oldest son who has moved in because he has a job around here now and his gigs in the town he lives in have dried up. He goes out to work but they are careful, construction so it is possible to keep a good distance. My husband so far has been doing the shopping since my lungs are so bad that I should really try to not go out at all. Keeping things from the outside clean as they come in.
Bored out of my mind not being able to go anywhere, but I likely would not have anyway. Baking bread like a fool, cooking so we have at least one really good meal. The rest is hit and miss for now.
My anxiety is pretty low, I do not like thinking about this but keeping up none the less.

(24,259 posts)I went with mostly for two reasons.
1) One of the valve stems on our only working vehicle has to be replaced so hubby will be going to the small local garage down the road. I'm not thrilled with it but we live on a small farm in the country and have to have a vehicle that is okay to go if needed.
and
2) Unfortunately we'll also need a few supplies from the market and Tractor Supply in town at the beginning of next month when our Soc Sec comes in. We're stocked up well enough until then.
ATM my 'plan A' is to order things online and have them either delivered or brought out to hubby, who will wear a mask (for this he's shaving his beard off after 24 yrs of having one) and gloves while out.
When he gets home... before coming inside he'll spray his shoes down with Lysol, remove the mask and gloves. Once inside he'll immediately strip, toss his clothes into the wash, and take a shower. Everything from the stores will either be wiped/sprayed down with a disinfectant or left in the truck for 24 to 48 hours.
Just to help us keep our sanity we might go for a ride in the truck over to the river a time or two a month just to sit in the truck, watch the river and enjoy our mug of coffee from home.
Basically 'social distancing' plus all safety precautions will definitely be practiced any time it's not just the two of us.

(250 posts)I'm working from home, I'm going out to get supplies as needed, but I've otherwise cut off socializing with my friends and my senior citizen parents, even though they're in good health. I keep some hand sanitizer in the car for when I re-enter it after an errand.
The gloves thing... I have gloves, but when you're wearing them while running an errand you're still touching everything, so unless you're disposing of them as you go I'm not sure they're more effective than hand sanitizer for our purposes.
I live in the city, I work on a college campus, it's likely I've crossed paths with someone who is carrying.
My parents, who are definitely not trumpers... they understand the problem but aren't really taking this as seriously as I feel they should. Dad is having his kitchen remodeled and mom just got her hair done...
