Coronavirus latest: Italian deaths slow for second day (DW)

March 23,2020

Amid Europe's most stringent lockdown, Italian deaths have dropped for a second day running. The IMF says a global recession could be worse than the global financial crisis. Follow DW for the latest.

... 17:50 New cases in Italy have fallen for the second day running. Official data data showed 4,789 new cases, nearly 700 fewer than the figure reported yesterday. There were also fewer deaths — 600  compared to 651 on Sunday.

Italy is suffering through the worst outbreak in Europe and has imposed a stringent, nation-wide lockdown. Authorities are still waiting to claim success, saying it is too early to determine if cases are actually slowing.

imposed a stringent lockdown. That's for the numbskulls who insist on comparing this to the flu.

Let's hope Italy peaked and in the subsequent days - the numbers will come down even more. That should bring a glimmer of hope to us here in the U.S. that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Also - the fact that many States here have taken measures to lock down - that the efforts made to 'flatten the curve' may even help us reach our the peak and downside of our curve even faster.

The worldwide death toll from the coronavirus pandemic has topped 10,000, with nearly a quarter of a million confirmed cases of COVID-19. Italy’s death toll has now surpassed China’s, where the outbreak was first reported, with over 3,400 deaths and more than 41,000 confirmed cases. In Milan, nurses report they’ve stopped counting the dead as wave after wave of COVID-19 patients with respiratory ailments overwhelm intensive care units.

So either quarantine works to flatten the curve or it doesn’t. Germany also showing positive news.
The medical professionals think quarantine works. If they are right, the numbers should fall.

apparently because in some areas, hospitals are not even treating those over 60 with coronavirus for lack of beds and ventilators. This was reported on one of the network cable shows earlier today.
