(4,447 posts)Normally, I only have to inject 5-6 ml Humalog after every meal. Now it's up to 12-14 because I've had to start eating rice as a staple. I'm very fortunate that I've been able to get by on low levels before now. I've stretched the shelf life by keeping Humalog and Levamir vials in prescription bottles in the fridge. They stay active for about 8 weeks for me that way. I really hope we don't see insulin shortages.

(1,301 posts)Ive been looking for rice everywhere for two weeks. Costco, Target, Vons, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and our local health food store. Everything is sold out except the minute varietieseven the bulk bins are empty. Same with dried beans.
Its not even available online.
Seems to be scarcer than toilet paper round these parts.

(4,447 posts)While so many people were freaking out and buying toilet paper and bottled water, I bought 20 pounds of rice, 20 pounds of chicken, and 10 pounds of stewing beef. Then I got online and bought 2 pounds of powdered butter, 4 pounds of powdered milk, and 5 pounds of powdered eggs. I did that right when I remembered that Trump had gotten rid of the pandemic response team.
I would talk to your grocery store manager and see when s/he thinks the next shipment is coming in, and then be there early.

(101,322 posts)Canned anything, pretty much. The freezers in the supermarket I went to on Friday looked pretty empty too (the vegetable section, anyway; I didn't see the rest of it). The OP's meat seems to vary - some there was plenty of (bacon, for instance, which surprised me, since it has a long shelf life), some was sold out.

(20,253 posts)which was shut down two weeks ago. Then I tried Wednesday and there were two slots for today. Half my order out of stuff, meat I ordered two consecutive times, then today shopper said we got ribeyes. They're going back. I called them for a heads up. She said ribeye has fat so it's tender. BS.
They each are half and half chunks of fat and meat here and there. One was $15+ the other $16+. I don't need shi**y meat for this price.
They know us been loyal since 1985. I looked at them again and no way I'm keeping them.
The fella who shopped I told very little fat. He sent them anyway. Nobody gives a crap lately.
I just let loose and I'm sorry y'all.
Yah, it's the stupid disease and other prevailing 'stupidity', but this far reaching peripheral sh*t is what's magnifying it.
rib eyes are not shitty meat! best cut of steak, broil or cook on the grill, hot and fast to med rare
no, it isn't lean so if you ordered lean they should have given you some (actually shitty) cut like round but still, please don't call ribeye shitty!

(19,962 posts)All growing up, I was told eating fat would be stored as fat, rather than unused carbs, and most of the time low fat products were augmented by sugar and/or salt.
The flavour from a rib eye is made all the better with, what my mother used to call "marbling". Worth a try ! I'm lucky here in Ireland that it's grass fed beef, and there's plenty of it ! Even Lidl and Aldi here source their beef from local farmers, and that has brought a big buy in from consumers.

smirkymonkey
(63,221 posts)I know the fattier cuts are supposed to be more flavorful, but I just have an aversion to any kind of visible animal fat. It literally makes me gag. If I have Prime Rib or a roast or anything like that, I will only cut out the lean pieces and eat those and discard the rest. I know people who love the fat and I can't understand it.
It also has to be very tender and cut like butter. I do occasionally cook w/ cheaper cuts like a London Broil or something like that for a stew or a Beef Bourguignon or a Stroganoff, where you just cook over low, slow heat so it gets tenderized and flavored by other ingredients, but I have to cut off every single bit of visible fat off first.

The choices are limited, so we have to supplement - we had to go to a second store to get 3 items on our list But I often find that the handful of specialty items we buy from somewhere else cost as much as the full shopping cart at ALDIs.

(4,673 posts)from the family-owned Aldi in Germany (it was my go-to grocer when I lived there in the 70's). The brothers had a falling out and the divided the company into two entities - one operating in Northern Germany the other in Southern. Then they each brought their grocery to the US - one as Aldi and one as TJ's but there is no ownership in common.
Sunriser13
(612 posts)https://www.thekitchn.com/aldi-trader-joes-parent-company-rumor-260999
From the second link:
"Aldi began as a single grocery store in Germany in the early 1900s. Decades later, the owners two sons expanded the one family owned and operated store into a chain of hundreds. As with many family companies, the brothers eventually had a business disagreement and decided to split the company geographically into Aldi Nord (north) and Aldi Süd (South). The two companies both own and operate various Aldis across Europe and the United States, but do so separately.
Meanwhile, Trader Joes began as a convenience store in California in 1958. A decade later, more locations opened across the state. In 1979 Aldi Nord acquired all Trader Joes in the United States, but continued to let them operate independently. On the other hand, Aldi Süd is the parent company of Trader Joes in Europe and Aldi locations in the United States. (Bear with me: I had to map this out Beautiful Mind-style on a Post-It note and am still doing mental gymnastics.)
In short, these two (or is it three?) grocery chains arent technically in cahoots. Aldi Nord owns Trader Joes in the States, but the Aldi stores that you see in the States are run by Aldi Süd, which is separate from Trader Joes. The chains are kind of like estranged cousins. Step-brothers? In-laws? We dont know! But it doesnt matter because the stores are run entirely independently with no joint ownership."
Heck, I like both of them!

(1,076 posts)Usually, panic buying that clearsout grocery stores is highly localized over things like a hurricane. Every single time we have one of those headed for Texas, our stores get wiped out. But I doubt that someone in Chicago or Spokane even felt a blip. This was a nationwide panic that hammered the entire supply chain. So everyone is feeling it.
However, the supply lines are already starting to show signs of recovering. For instance, today was the first time since the Black Friday hoarding day that my husband mentioned his risers. Risers are that very top shelf where grocers store product that they have too many of to fit on the shelves, but not enough to stay in a box in the wareroom. Before Black Friday, my husband's #1 thing he griped about were the risers, because they were often a sign of flaws in the inventory system. That he was silent about them for so long told me how empty his store was. Yet now he's mentioning those damned risers again, which means there's plenty of certain things. You don't have products on the risers if your supply chain is FUBAR or dead.
We also got a great laugh today when he showed me a picture of his store's "replacement" order for Spam Lite. Can we say a 4X4X4 pallet of the stuff? There were hundreds of them! And he had another pallet of of the regular stuff and some of the other flavors. Which I knew nothing about, because I thought Spam was Spam. I never look at it on the shelf, so how would I know there are umpteen versions of the stuff?
Look, the supply chain has taken a hard hit, but food grows back, fish get caught and meat can be replaced as long as you don't wipe out herds to get everybody some now. It will take a bit to get stuff processed into Spam and tuna and Spaghetti-Os and Mexicorn again, but we'll get there, eventually.
Our local supermarket chain thinks that everything will be back to normal, or close to it, by Easter. It usually takes a week or so to bounce back from a hurricane run. So taking until Easter to get back on their feet sounds about right.
What I'm hoping that grocers and other retailers will have learned from this experience to clamp down early on panic buying if there's another disaster. As soon as they know something is coming, start rationing early--each customer gets one pack each of TP and paper towels, one bottle of hand sanitizer, two loaves of bread, one jug of milk, one carton of eggs, and so on. If the grocery stores had limited what people could buy, we wouldn't be in this mess now.
And if grocers won't or can't control their inventories voluntarily, the government might need to look at a rationing card/ID type thing, that must be presented when an emergency or disaster is declared. That way, people won't be able to abuse the supply chain by overbuying at a store multiple times a day or multiple days in a row, or going from store to store to clear out product. You get your rations one day a week. And that's it. Try to abuse the system, and go to jail.
Works for me.

Freds had no pickup slot available at my local store but the one 2 miles further down the road had some on Friday mid-morning. There were zero slots until I woke up at 4:15 am today and looked blearily at my phone. I created the shopping list yesterday and was able to check out today at 4:30 am for pickup around 11 am Friday. Its just my weekly shopping list so I dont have any sort of weird quantities of stuff.
Having been to the closer store in person last weekend, I know that the meats I chose arent particularly hit- things like chicken sausages and some Italian pork sausage. I ordered four different kinds, and while thats a lot of sausage it also freezes well.
Next week Ill order a couple of salmon fillets. The local Fred Meyers isnt having butchers provide meat over their counter- everything is pre wrapped, which is fine. (34,136 posts)So I put it on my list. When I got to the meat department, no ground beef at all. Ground pork and ground turkey, no beef. They had boneless pork loin chops BOGO so I got two packs of those, four per pack. Each will give us two meals, so that's good. But I had a specific dish I need ground beef for, though I guess ground turkey might do.
Oh well, we have plenty for now, I was just going to take advantage of the sale.

(15,810 posts)Depending on the dish. Check the fat content of the turkey though as you might need to adjust a bit.
csziggy
(34,136 posts)Turkey would work just as well, but it was not on sale and about $3 a pound more than the beef - that's why I passed on it more than any other reason.
I would have just tossed the beef into the freezer until later, anyway. I roasted a turkey Friday and we processed it and have several turkey dinners in the freezer for later. The pork chops went straight into the freezer.
Pretty much it's new in and oldest out first. So this week we'll either have salmon or chicken and yellow rice. Probably the chicken because my husband bought fresh tomatoes instead of canned ones, so the fresh ones need to be used up. The chicken we bought at Costco last November so it definitely needs to be used!

(20,253 posts)There was some yesterday, but I opted out buying it. Mb wrong decision. I'm regretting it now that I brought it up. 😁
Hope you can make that casserole of yours. I bet it's comforting.

(10,137 posts)and fresh produce. Their stock is eccentric even in the best of times (sometimes the owner gets the notion to stock every hot sauce known to mankind, other months he's on an Indian pickles kick) but they try to be good about keeping staples on hand, like milk, bread and eggs. Today they even had toilet paper - limit one roll per customer.

(17,340 posts)And a friend of mine on Facebook posted the following in regards to this sort of thing:
Just a little history lesson...
Back in the day, cities and towns were ringed by warehouses where all manner of goods were stored. When your local store ordered toilet paper, it could be brought in from the warehouse that day. And in times of crisis - floods, fires, shortages - each town had a reserve of supplies they could access.
Then some MBA genius thought "Why are we paying for all this warehouse space when we have all these trucks? Let the manufacturer store their own goods."
And so "Just In Time Delivery" was born. Now when your local store needs a shipment of toilet paper, it has to be shipped by truck from the manufacturer. It has saved billions of dollars, but any extraordinary event - fire, flood, rise in gas prices - can disrupt the supply chain.
So these shortages are not socialist. These shortages (and the accompanying air pollution from all these trucks) are brought to you by: Capitalism.

(4,608 posts)Have you called local restaurants? Theyve likely got lots of meat in their walk-ins and freezers and may be willing to sell it to you. Restaurants are either scrambling to empty out their time-sensitive stock or diversifying their business in order to stay afloat through this mess. At the little one where I work, we have been doing not only tons of carryout/curbside business, and deliveries (which we had never done before), but also retail sales of raw fish fillets, raw crab cakes, shrimp, and other seafood for folks to cook at home. We can order pretty much anything (bacon, chicken, toilet paper! etc) from our distributors and have been ordering all sorts of items for our customers. Pay by phone, we call when it arrives (usually a day or two).

I don't trust the staff slicing this stuff. I had cheese evidence stuck on meat and other weird stuff. I will cook the meat if I do get it which I haven't like a fried baloney sandwich. Which I may have made 25 or so years ago but no mo'.

(20,204 posts)The fresh meat section at my regular Kroger was bare BUT there was actually lots of frozen fish and chicken. They also had frozen angus hamburger patties - 2 lbs for $7.
.
Also, I scored some fresh hamburger by placing an order online for curbside pickup a couple of days in advance.

(20,253 posts)We'll make do. Shopping now is hit or miss.
On teevee last nite it showed our local farmers' market and they had meat! C'mon down! Watch them be emptied and sparse.
You know bins in front of the meat dept. where all sorts of tenders, and like that frozen? Wiped out bare!
They're having seniors' shopping hours now in many stores from 7-9 or 6-8 a.m.😴
