What do I do if I can't get kitty litter?

Rose and Fred are indoor cats, so they can't do their business outside. Rose doesn't ever seem to want to go outside, she's strictly a homebody. Fred, Rose's son, goes outside perhaps a couple times a month, but he never stays out for long.

Right now I have enough kitty litter to last about three weeks. I'll be running out of other stuff by then too, so I'll have to go grocery shopping. I'm worried about a lot of things, whether I'll be able to get them at all any more by then, but specifically, what will I do if I can't get kitty litter? They've got to have some place to do their business.

Should I just toss Rose and Fred outside whether they like it or not and close the door and not let them in for most of the day? I feel it'll be just plain mean to make them stay outside most of the time.

Should I go out in the yard and dig up some soil and dump it in the kitty litter box? What I don't like about that is that dirt will have critters in it -- microorganisms, worms, bugs, etc., and I don't want to be bringing those kinds of yukkies into the house.

Any suggestions, y'all?

Or maybe I should just wait three weeks until I actually run out of kitty litter and deal with the problem then if the stores don't have any.

I'd recommend Target because you get 25 lbs., not 20 lbs.

I ordered before from Walfart and they sent me 5 bags, 30 lbs. each.

Now it is a one bag limit.

If you want more, the only thing you can get is the clay litter for a cheaper price in 25 lb. bags which has a lot of dust.

I have bought litter from chewy.com as well. It is a great place to buy it from if you can catch a sale on it. I always check around for the lowest price out there due to my very limited income.

Tidy Cats is far better for cats for one reason: A lot less dust. The litterd that have a lot of dust, like the clay stuff Walfart is now pushing, is NOT GOOD for your cat(s) because it gets on/into their paws and they lick it off and and swallow all of that dust. Over time, it can sicken a cat, especially if they are older indoor cats like mine are, and you don't want that, esp. during times like we are now in. Just the thought of needing a vet right now scares me I must admit!

Tidy Cats un-clumped is the safest one to use as far as bagged cat litters go, the unscented type is the best one to get because yes, your cat can smell that perfume they put in the scented type and again, they lick their paws and swallow the dust, even though much less than the clay stuff, god does that stuff stink! Seems the cats don't like anymore than I do!

If you can't get it, shredded newspaper is a possibility. Some cats don't like to do their business outside. My family had a cat was mostly indoors but she liked to hang out in the yard and eat chipmunks. But when she had to go she'd howl at the front door until she was let in, and she'd run down to the basement to use her litter box. Then she'd go right back outside to hunt chipmunks.

But definitely more than an irritant. Long term Exposure can cause severe Lung damage and its a carcinogen. When my old team worked around it PPE was mandatory.

Once mixed in moist soilless mix it no longer can put it is glass like dust. It really is some bad stuff dry.

In a pinch you could use shredded paper.

I worked in a pet store ages ago and then had a type of litter which was essentially just shredded recycled paper.

You just have to clear it away faster because there won't be any odor control.

You could probably use sawdust as well if you have access to it.

Do order some from Amazon, since their distant delivery date could just be covering their butts, and MAYBE it will come sooner. I have enough for about 12 days for my 4 cats.

People are panic buying and hoarding it right now, but I think that eventually that will ease up. As much as I don't want to go out, I will keep checking the stores for litter (and toilet paper). I think I will score some of both before it's too late if I keep looking.

You can scoop kitty litter more than most people think. I used to volunteer at a low-income pet shelter, so I know. And people are right about shreded newspaper. Some commercial cat litter is made from that. And garden dirt is what people used to use for kitty litter before the commercial stuff was invented. Although sand is even better. Especially if you are near a beach.

Many substitute items for cat litter have been offered. Others to consider are bags of sand or sawdust available in garden sections of any big box store as well as nurseries and gardening stores online.

Large sacks of wood shavings used as horse bedding can be bought at farm and feed stores, and some garden centers. You might even get it free if you know of a woodlot where firewood is cut and sold. Smaller bags used in rodent habitats are sold at pet stores and the pet aisles at Wal-Mart and Target stores.

Wood pellets used in pellet burning wood stoves are similar to those expensive pine pellets. They are sold in 25 and 40lb bales at most hardware stores like Lowes and Home Depot for about $5 to $8. Get the soft wood pellets over the hard wood as they are more absorbent.

Oil Dri is used to absorb motor oil if your car drips on your garage floor. Kitty litter is the same stuff, but not baked as long and has scent or anti-odor chemicals added to it. It will not harm your cat.

I mean....they're fucking cats! Yes...toss them outside if need be. They know where the food is, they'll come back.

But do you really think they give a damn what the actual material is?

Just use fucking dirt, for crying out loud.

And from what I gather, dirt is sort of kind of everywhere, and rather inexpensive.

DIRT!

And I get my chops busted for saying there might be a hole in the food chain.

But the fact that I don't own any now doesn't change the underlying fact that.....

THEY'RE BLEEDIN' CATS!

They will be fine, for crying out loud. They will relieve themselves in a pile of clothes if need be, and you know it!

I get that people love their animals, truly. My avatar pic has been the same for almost the entire time I've been a member.

But we aren't talking about an animal that is utterly helpless.

ITS A CAT!

It will be fine. Even if it has to suffer the indignity of pooping in a litter box filled with garden soil.

Amazon is not out of it. I always order it online in bulk (enough to make the shipping free) so I don't have to haul it all through the store and put the dusty ass stuff in the car with my groceries. It stays in the box Amazon shipped it in until I am ready to take out another bag and use it. My grocery bags don't get all dusty with cat litter.

That is one thing I despise; cat litter. I wish they would make the scoopable kind less dusty.

My vets have recommended using that rather than kitty litter after surgeries. Don't cut it up too small, though. The long fettucine-type shreds do nicely.

If you have access to other smooth papers that aren't too fibrous, those can work, too.

That’s what I used as kitty litter in the past, but it was a cat that I purchased from a woman who was already using it for her cats — i.e., the cat was used to it.

Cheaper than kitty litter, and it contains odor well. The stuff turns to powder after it gets wet, though.

The smaller pellets work better for a litter box imo.

Edit: Here’s a video about it.

We used 'Feline Pine' for around 10 yrs too until a Tractor Supply opened near us and I saw the equine bedding and it was the same thing but quite a bit cheaper.

We're a multi (strictly indoor) cat household and, like you, find this works fantastic on odor. We've taken in rescues over the years and find most adapt rather well to it as well.

A bonus is that, while it takes more time to do so, it's compostable.

The turds didn’t dry up as quickly, but covering them with the powder (which the cat sometimes didn’t do) would do the trick before disposal.

They are indoor cats and will be subject to harm. Look for online sites to order some and order several bags. You can also use shredded paper or maybe even train them to use the toilet.

* I would not use dirt either because they can get giardia and other parasites from dirt.

My parents used sawdust or old newspaper shredded up. We went to Pet Supermarket yesterday. Only one cashier and one other customer. Bought a 50 lb. bag of clay litter. You will probably find more of the clay than the clumping litter.

Please do not put your cats outside.

I use a major brand, and got some from a local place yesterday. I just checked online, and plenty of folks have it, and it is certainly not a three week wait.

I really hope you aren't being serious about throwing indoor cats outside for the most of the day for some.

108. Look for feline pine, or pine horse pellets.
Thu Mar 26, 2020, 12:24 PM
Mar 2020

Usually people don't buy pine cat litter. Feline Pine is actually great stuff, but it works best if you have sifting litter boxes, which you probably don't. It uses pine pellets that absorb urine and liquid from poo. The pellets will break down. You can scoop out spent areas of pellets, or if you have sifters that stuff will fall right through. You can get pine horse bedding pellets too. They're almost exactly the same, and cheaper, but Feline Pine has some deodorizer mixed in there.

You can probably wait at least another week. Feline Pine is cheaper to order, since it's lighter than clay litter.

Also, have you visited all the pet supply stores nearby? We did have a run on litter and some other supplies at the grocery stores, but you can get almost anything at the pet store except KMR powder.
