Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWhat do I do if I can't get kitty litter?
Rose and Fred are indoor cats, so they can't do their business outside. Rose doesn't ever seem to want to go outside, she's strictly a homebody. Fred, Rose's son, goes outside perhaps a couple times a month, but he never stays out for long.
Right now I have enough kitty litter to last about three weeks. I'll be running out of other stuff by then too, so I'll have to go grocery shopping. I'm worried about a lot of things, whether I'll be able to get them at all any more by then, but specifically, what will I do if I can't get kitty litter? They've got to have some place to do their business.
Should I just toss Rose and Fred outside whether they like it or not and close the door and not let them in for most of the day? I feel it'll be just plain mean to make them stay outside most of the time.
Should I go out in the yard and dig up some soil and dump it in the kitty litter box? What I don't like about that is that dirt will have critters in it -- microorganisms, worms, bugs, etc., and I don't want to be bringing those kinds of yukkies into the house.
Any suggestions, y'all?
Or maybe I should just wait three weeks until I actually run out of kitty litter and deal with the problem then if the stores don't have any.

(20,877 posts)I'd recommend Target because you get 25 lbs., not 20 lbs.
I ordered before from Walfart and they sent me 5 bags, 30 lbs. each.
Now it is a one bag limit.
If you want more, the only thing you can get is the clay litter for a cheaper price in 25 lb. bags which has a lot of dust.
I have bought litter from chewy.com as well. It is a great place to buy it from if you can catch a sale on it. I always check around for the lowest price out there due to my very limited income.
Tidy Cats is far better for cats for one reason: A lot less dust. The litterd that have a lot of dust, like the clay stuff Walfart is now pushing, is NOT GOOD for your cat(s) because it gets on/into their paws and they lick it off and and swallow all of that dust. Over time, it can sicken a cat, especially if they are older indoor cats like mine are, and you don't want that, esp. during times like we are now in. Just the thought of needing a vet right now scares me I must admit!
Tidy Cats un-clumped is the safest one to use as far as bagged cat litters go, the unscented type is the best one to get because yes, your cat can smell that perfume they put in the scented type and again, they lick their paws and swallow the dust, even though much less than the clay stuff, god does that stuff stink! Seems the cats don't like anymore than I do!

(115,806 posts)If you can't get it, shredded newspaper is a possibility. Some cats don't like to do their business outside. My family had a cat was mostly indoors but she liked to hang out in the yard and eat chipmunks. But when she had to go she'd howl at the front door until she was let in, and she'd run down to the basement to use her litter box. Then she'd go right back outside to hunt chipmunks.

I'm not a cat person and don't deal with cat litter, but I've seen it in a nursery, and it looks like cat litter to me. Hell, for all intents and purposes, Perlite and Vermiculite look the same to me.

I worked in a pet store ages ago and then had a type of litter which was essentially just shredded recycled paper.
You just have to clear it away faster because there won't be any odor control.

Do order some from Amazon, since their distant delivery date could just be covering their butts, and MAYBE it will come sooner. I have enough for about 12 days for my 4 cats.
People are panic buying and hoarding it right now, but I think that eventually that will ease up. As much as I don't want to go out, I will keep checking the stores for litter (and toilet paper). I think I will score some of both before it's too late if I keep looking.

(86,748 posts)pellet stove pellets in a deep tray. They crumble into sawdust when fluid is added. It is easy to maintain, dump it once a week. It used to cost $4/40lbs back then but it is still probably cheaper than regular clay litter or any other kind. 40# would last about a month and I used a lot for each new change.

You can scoop kitty litter more than most people think. I used to volunteer at a low-income pet shelter, so I know. And people are right about shreded newspaper. Some commercial cat litter is made from that. And garden dirt is what people used to use for kitty litter before the commercial stuff was invented. Although sand is even better. Especially if you are near a beach.
procon
(15,805 posts)Many substitute items for cat litter have been offered. Others to consider are bags of sand or sawdust available in garden sections of any big box store as well as nurseries and gardening stores online.
Large sacks of wood shavings used as horse bedding can be bought at farm and feed stores, and some garden centers. You might even get it free if you know of a woodlot where firewood is cut and sold. Smaller bags used in rodent habitats are sold at pet stores and the pet aisles at Wal-Mart and Target stores.
Wood pellets used in pellet burning wood stoves are similar to those expensive pine pellets. They are sold in 25 and 40lb bales at most hardware stores like Lowes and Home Depot for about $5 to $8. Get the soft wood pellets over the hard wood as they are more absorbent.
Oil Dri is used to absorb motor oil if your car drips on your garage floor. Kitty litter is the same stuff, but not baked as long and has scent or anti-odor chemicals added to it. It will not harm your cat.

Cheaper than kitty litter, and it contains odor well. The stuff turns to powder after it gets wet, though.
The smaller pellets work better for a litter box imo.
Edit: Heres a video about it.

(24,259 posts)We used 'Feline Pine' for around 10 yrs too until a Tractor Supply opened near us and I saw the equine bedding and it was the same thing but quite a bit cheaper.
We're a multi (strictly indoor) cat household and, like you, find this works fantastic on odor. We've taken in rescues over the years and find most adapt rather well to it as well.
A bonus is that, while it takes more time to do so, it's compostable.

They are indoor cats and will be subject to harm. Look for online sites to order some and order several bags. You can also use shredded paper or maybe even train them to use the toilet.
* I would not use dirt either because they can get giardia and other parasites from dirt.

(2,019 posts)Usually people don't buy pine cat litter. Feline Pine is actually great stuff, but it works best if you have sifting litter boxes, which you probably don't. It uses pine pellets that absorb urine and liquid from poo. The pellets will break down. You can scoop out spent areas of pellets, or if you have sifters that stuff will fall right through. You can get pine horse bedding pellets too. They're almost exactly the same, and cheaper, but Feline Pine has some deodorizer mixed in there.
You can probably wait at least another week. Feline Pine is cheaper to order, since it's lighter than clay litter.
Also, have you visited all the pet supply stores nearby? We did have a run on litter and some other supplies at the grocery stores, but you can get almost anything at the pet store except KMR powder.
