A Filipino-developed virgin coconut oil derivative as cure to the COVID-19 is being tested in Singapore as the dreaded coronavirus continues to spread across the world and while researchers, scientists, pharmaceutical companies, and medical institutions are scrambling to create a vaccine and are pitching in to find a cure to stop the dreaded coronavirus.
After Ateneo de Manila University professor Dr. Fabian Antonio Dayrit published his research at the end of January 2020 on the potential of the antiviral activity of coconut oils lauric acid and monolaurin to cure viruses such as what was then known as the novel coronavirus (nCoV), the Philippine government announced it was sending samples for testing in Singapore.
The Ateneo study found evidence that suggests coconut oil and its derivatives have effective anti-viral compounds, based on several in vitro studies that support the potential of coconut oil, lauric acid and its derivatives as effective and safe agents against a virus such as what is now known as the Coronavirus Disease-2019 COVID-19.
The Philippines is now working with the National University of Singapore which has agreed to do more studies and is looking at the efficacy of virgin coconut oil against COVID-19, Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said at a press briefing in Malacañang on February 24.
We have heard very good studies with regard to its ability to neutralize the viruses, but for the COVID- 19, it is not clear, said Health Secretary Francisco Duque III in an interview with CNN Philippines confirming the collaboration with Singapore.

In Jamaica, CVD is now the leading cause of death with an estimated crude mortality rate from ischemic heart disease and stroke of 110 per 100 000 in 2008 [5]. This is consistent with local national surveys which have demonstrated a high prevalence of CVD risk factors such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes and elevated cholesterol in Jamaica [6].

The intravenous use of coconut water.

Abstract
Medical resources routinely used for intravenous hydration and resuscitation of critically ill patients may be limited in remote regions of the world. When faced with these shortages, physicians have had to improvise with the available resources, or simply do without. We report the successful use of coconut water as a short-term intravenous hydration fluid for a Solomon Island patient, a laboratory analysis of the local coconuts, and a review of previously documented intravenous coconut use.

(6,110 posts)hard shell in two with a steel hatchet. Then the fresh coconut semi-spheres were grated to remove all the edible parts. Then finely chopped green chilies and fresh garlic was added to the grated coconut, and the mix was used as a starting point to cook everything in the kitchen on that day. Good thing my parents had a full time cook, because cooking was a lot of work without any refrigeration, so everything was cooked from scratch every day. Never used anything ready made, not even bread. Naan was made everyday from wheat flour. But everything was tasty and healthy and not expensive ingredients. Meat was once a week treat for dinner and it was always goat meat. Such was the life growing up in India, and that home cooked simple unbelievably tasty food is the only thing I miss from India.

I love naan or its roti sister - it is home made bread. I haven't touched red meat since 1979 but do eat seafood and bird meat - mostly chicken. I love Indian dishes with peas - split peas or chick peas.
Indians make the best Vegi dishes on the planet.

(6,110 posts)I understood why American kids hate vegetables. Most are simply boiled or steamed vegetables. Kinda boring.
I got to tell you an anecdotal story of my boss in Chicago. He loved Indian restaurants so him and I frequented them during lunch time often. One time I suggested him that we visit this all vegetarian restaurant in Westmont. On the ride there, he kept wondering if he will find anything to eat there and might go hungry. But we go there, and he is sampling from the 30 or more items. When we were finished and leaving, he quipped "I think I understand now how Indians can live on vegetarian food, there were so many tasty dishes in that restaurant". Thanks for reading so far malaise.

(65,134 posts)For those that read the link, it's not coconut oil itself, although they're working on that.
The known antiviral activity comes from lauric acid and monolaurin.
The first is a fatty acid with 12 carbon atoms. It's made by splitting the oil with a strong base ( sodium or potassium hydroxide.)
It splits off the glycerin & makes soap! This approach has been used since ancient Sumarians!
React the soap with hydrochloric acid and we get the fatty acids and salt.
It specifies C12 so the other chains would be distilled away. This means it's not a DIY project at home.
The second is the monoglyceride, which according to this article has antiviral properties, but is a natural emulsifier.
It's made by taking that lauric acid made above & catalytically reacting it at the right proportion with some of that glycerin we split off.
Good thing is that both of these are very bland in test & have VERY low odor.
Oil Chemistry 101 class is dismissed! LOL!

(269,144 posts)That said since it is clearly not a home project - I will continue to drink the water and use the oil.
