Christian pastor who thought COVID-19 is just 'mass hysteria' is among the first in Virginia to die

.

One of the first deaths in Virginia from coronavirus was a 66-year-old Christian “musical evangelist” who fell ill while on a trip to New Orleans with his wife. As the Friendly Atheist’s Hemant Mehta points out, Landon Spradlin had previously shared opinions that the pandemic was the result of “mass hysteria” from the media.

On March 13, Spradlin shared a misleading meme that compared coronavirus deaths to swine flu deaths and suggested the media is using the pandemic to hurt Trump. In the comments, Spradlin acknowledged that the outbreak is a “real issue,” but added that he believes “the media is pumping out fear and doing more harm than good”

“It will come and it will go,” he wrote.

That same say, he shared a post from another pastor that told the story of a missionary in South Africa who “protected” himself from the bubonic plague with the “Spirit of God.”

“As long as I walk in the light of that law [of the Spirit of life], no germ will attach itself to me,” read a quote from the post.

And it's not just his congregants who're going to get sick now. It's the grocery clerk in his neighborhood. It's the family members and neighbors and coworkers of his congregants. It's the nurses and doctors who tended to him as he lay dying.

The people denying the reality of the virus are not tragic figures undone by their own hubris. They're suicide bombers for ignorance. They're kamikaze pilots attacking America in the causes of capitalism or anti-science.

Reach out to every maga you know! We are all in this together. Explain the situation calmly. If necessary, use single syllable words.

Our president's inability to live in reality has already killed one of his supporters and looks likely to kill more before this is over. It won't discriminate. It will infect anyone it can.

Get the word out anyway you can.

I am very concerned about what happens in our rural communities with their penchant to believe in this lying president, their elderly demographics and their hospitals already financially struggling.

We cannot beat this virus back before we beat it everywhere. The alternative is staying put and waiting for a vaccine and that is not happening any time soon.

sorry if that is morbid, but if the media humiliates this guy and points out what an idiot he was, that might save the lives of some people who decide to stay home.

Trump is telling all his "Christian" followers to go and crowd into churches across the land on Easter Sunday..........WHAT?????????????

To all church goers who follow Trumps recommendation, I suggest you recite, in unison, the following Psalm first thing:

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil................

The statistics on the virus, by the time Easter comes, should be enough to shock even them.......then again, you never know.....

WH Easter Egg Hunt will be held this year? Will the tRumps be attending church at Easter? OT but I read that John Thune (big tRump fan) flew home on a private jet, wearing a mask after being exposed to the virus. Your tax dollars at work. He was among those gop representatives who spent last 4th of July in Moscow.

Your statement reminds me of the old story about the guy on his roof in a flood telling his rescuers "God will take care of me" and when he died, God tells him "I sent you a boat, I sent you a helicopter, etc'
I've had a couple friends talk about "I'll just pray", and i said "Of course. but if you get sick, you go to the hospital and pray THERE"

Yes, he was wrong. Yes, he was ignorant. Ignorant isn't the same as evil. And a few weeks ago, I knew plenty of Democrats who didn't take it seriously enough. Not that it should matter.

May he RIP.

In fact he puts everyone in unnecessary danger and encourages others to do the same. How many died because of him or people who listened to him? My tolerance for ignorant, stupid Trumpers has been reduced to zero. I am sorry if that sounds callous, but it is honestly how I feel.

I don’t know the will of God and I would not read it as a sign. I will pray for the man and his family.

Use your God given mind to love your neighbor and your self. I don’ think it is God’s will that anyone endanger their neighbor or self.

If his stupidity just killed himself, you could call it just desserts or poetic justice. But he's infected dozens of other people and now it's riding through his community.

None of those innocent people ask for this. This is definitely not an act or effect of karma

I am sorry this man, or any man or woman, has or will die from this plague.

For the same reasons I don't believe in the death penalty, for the same reasons I believe in gun control, I am saddened by this. All life is precious.

No one deserves to die, not even for intentional murder, but certainly not for saying and doing dumb things.

This man was still a human being.

Progressives are supposed to be able to put themselves in the shoes of others and find empathy in even the hardest places.

I hope his family and friends will eventually be ok. I hope anyone he infected will be ok. This is tragic.

he has a family and friends who love him and who are grieving.

Having said that, I think this shows how irresponsible it is to go out there and say this thing is a hoax. It can hurt a lot of people, not just the old. And it's a real threat. Hopefully people in his community are taking it seriously now.

Some people - Royalty, politicians, Important people, people of God for example - seem to think the virus is for Common People only, and carry on with their business.
