But it's guaranteed these are not "new cases" -- they are just newly detected. It is exceedingly unlikely that they are the only cases in this prison.

As of yesterday, Michigan had tested about 950 per million (number of tests from this source).

That is a VERY small fraction of the population. Compare with NY and WA at more than 6000 tests per million (these are still just a small fraction, but with more tests per capita, they have identified more the the cases "out there" )

As testing ramps us in our respective states, we'll be seeing big jump in the figures reported. Keep in mind, these number don't reflect actual new cases, they just reflect previously undetected cases being detected. There are MANY more "out there" to be detected. For example, If we assume 1% of the population is currently infected, that's over 3 million cases yet to be detected in the US.
