Coronavirus spreading in The Villages
By AREK SARKISSIAN 03/27/2020 06:30 PM EDT
TALLAHASSEE At least five residents from The Villages have contracted the coronavirus through community spread or close contact with someone else who had the virus, according to the Florida Department of Health in Sumter County.
The Villages is a rapidly growing retirement community of more than 50,000 residents that spans three north central Florida counties. Most of the community is in Sumter County, where 29 people have tested positive for the virus as of Friday.
At least 16 of the 29 residents who tested positive had contracted the virus while traveling, and another eight residents remained under investigation.
Five residents either became infected through the community, or after having close contact with someone who also tested positive, Megan McCarthy, a DOH Sumter County spokesperson, said.
At least 34 people in Florid have died from Covid-19 and at least 2,900 people have been infected, according to the state Department of Health.
The Villages last week became one of the first locations in the state to receive a 250-bed mobile hospital from the Florida Division of Emergency Services.
McCarthy said The Villages has closed facilities and outdoor squares where residents typically congregate for events.
Even the dog park has been closed down any place where peo

(14,857 posts)I bet a lot of them are still gathering in their homes. Not much that can be done to stop them doing that.

(13,776 posts)This must be scary for you and for them, but luckily your mom must have experience with taking precautions against spreading infection, so it will come easier to her to keep them safe. I hope theyre prepared and especially that they stay healthy.

(42,334 posts)Mostly Sumter, but also Lake and Marion. I bet the numbers are higher.
Also, Sumter is a very poor county. I bet The Villages isn't paying a dime for testing, etc. They leach off the poor residents for everything.

Maybe there will be more testing at some point in the future.

I am just shaking my head and wondering what the hell their families must be thinking. I am sad about the heartaches to come. Maybe they'll dodge the worse case scenario. I'm hoping some of those residents were like my grandparents and not only smart, but full of common sense.

(14,857 posts)My parents have been and still are being so fucking stupid about this. If my father, in particular catches this he's probably a dead man, due to existing issues he has. Yet he still goes out every fucking day to crowded stores and such to run silly errands he doesn't need to do just because he gets antsy being at home. He's always been that way, but damn, can't he just go for a drive and not stop anywhere? They're convinced that this is less deadly than the flu, and they won't be told otherwise. They're not going to believe it's real until it starts killing off their friends - if it doesn't get them them first.

I can't help but point our the irony of this headline after Florida allowed tens of thousands of youth from many states to party on their beaches for spring break:
On the heels of a huge Mardi Gras celebration, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sent a strong message Friday to residents of New Orleans and Louisiana dont plan on visiting the Sunshine State.
Does this mean any state who had kids go to the beach should ban all Florida residents from visiting?

Oh, and another juicy one, a top-of-page ad: Napolinos Italian restaurant is having live Italian music on Friday and Saturday nights!

(15,540 posts)Just because someone's a senior citizen doesn't mean they're wise or smart. They've probably been the stupid ones most of their lives but now the stupidity is exacerbated by age.
I can say that because I'm a senior and live in a senior community and a lot of them are pretty damned stupid and voted for Trump. Plus, let's not forget the most stupid of them all - Trump. Those of us old enough to remember him as a younger person proves the adage that whatever's wrong with you as a young person is only exacerbated as you age. Some of us knew he was a narcissist and conman back in the 70's but now he's a malignant narcissist and the supreme conman.
