Trump authorizes recall of up to 1 million ready reserve troops to battle coronavirus

Retired military? maybe not anymore...

Trump announced Friday he will activate the military’s ready reserve components to help in the country’s response to the fast-spreading coronavirus pandemic, potentially recalling tens of thousands of separated servicemembers to active-duty.

“This will allow us to mobilize medical disaster emergency response personnel to help wage our battle against the virus,” Trump said in a Friday evening press conference. “We have a lot of people, retirees, great military people, they're coming back in.”

Details on exactly which individuals will be recalled were not immediately released by the White House, but the executive order regarding the move said officials could recall up to 1 million individuals for up to two years.

Earlier Friday, Army officials said that more than 9,000 former soldiers with medical training expressed interest in assisting with the coronavirus pandemic efforts. The Army emailed more than 800,000 such troops to gauge their interest.

(Retired) Ready Reserve Categories are under 60 first, over 60 last, with or without disability, not much in the way of specifics were announced

Officers and anyone after 20 years retirement can be called up

I was trying to puzzle out whether either of my siblings could be called up. One was an officer (separated after his minimum time was up- trained pilot) and the other was enlisted (intelligence, but never an officer- now works for fed). Neither were medical at all.

10. "Medic!" - Army Asks Retired Soldiers in Health Care Fields to Come Back for COVID-19 Fight
Sat Mar 28, 2020, 01:22 AM
Mar 2020

The call was addressed to retirees from the following health care-specific military occupational specialties:

60F: Critical Care Officer
60N: Anesthesiologist
66F: Nurse Anesthetist
66S: Critical Care Nurse
66P: Nurse Practitioner
66T: ER Nurse
68V: Respiratory Specialist
68W: Medic

The message came with a caveat: retired personnel now working in a civilian capacity in a hospital or other medical facility should make that known. Army officials said they did not want to pull personnel from service they were "providing to the Nation" in that role.

They added that former soldiers from a different specialty who were interested in supporting Army efforts should also reach out to communicate that interest.
