WASHINGTON The White House coronavirus task force has featured two trusted medical voices, diplomatic but authoritative, able to gently push back on President Trump without incurring his wrath: Drs. Anthony S. Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and Deborah L. Birx, the coronavirus response coordinator.
But this week, Dr. Birxs comments casting doubt on talk of ventilator and hospital-bed shortages, and praising Mr. Trumps attention to detail in lavish terms, have raised questions about her independence as the number of coronavirus infections in the United States has soared past 100,000.
Practically overnight, Dr. Birx has become a partisan Rorschach test. Conservative commentators have praised her as a truth-teller, pushing back on coronavirus hysteria. Critics of Mr. Trump accused her of squandering the credibility she had developed as a health official in Democratic and Republican administrations.
Dr. Birxs comments, especially those dismissing ventilator shortages, startled some health experts. While most hospitals might have sufficient supplies at the moment, many worry about a crush of patients in the very near future.

The first few days she looked like a hostage whose soul was being crushed with every word the POS spewed. Now she's become Patty fucking Hearst.

Sis I hate to be simplistic but the scarves tell a story. They're all lunatics - I had to work with some of these morons - people with a plethora of certificates who reject every notion about science for religion. And yet they want that certification more than life itself.

(9,426 posts)hypnotic potion being added to tRump's makeup or hair spray? Most people fail to understand HOW anyone could be supportive of the clown, especially educated people. Pence gazes adoringly at him as though he is Ronnie to his Nancy. Anyone can see that tRump is not very bright, he is childishly ignorant. We are the laughingstock of the entire world, having that dumbass in the WH. Thanks gop, you outdid yourselves this time. We have a mental patient running the show.

(15,286 posts)the federal govt and wanted to get attention to the need for funding of/for one of my programs, I conjured up the worst possible outcome, usually ending in the death of a pilot or crew, and sent that up the chain of command in order to get what I needed. I think there is at least some of that going on with Cuomo and DeBlasio.

(15,286 posts)when it happens, it's horrifying. That's precisely why it works to get attention focused. From what I understand, the entire national stockpile of ventilators is somewhere between 10,000-13,000. They can't all go the NY, can they?

(15,286 posts)NY/Cuomo/NYC/DeBlasio could be doing. Right now they should put the specs for masks, gowns, ventilators and whatever else they need right there front and center on their websites and inviting anyone interested to suppy a prototype. I would not be worrying about potential patent infringement. There are lots of smart, innovative Americans eager to help I am postively sure.
There are all kinds of occupations that use face shields. I'd be asking NYC residents who are in occupations that use them to turn them in if they aren't being used. Maybe you don't want to wear a hockey helmet with a full face shield, but in a pinch, it might do.
Call for seamstresses. NYC was the center of the garment industry. I'd bet there are still plenty of seamstresses and tailors around.
I'm guessing ventilators are essentially air compressors. I'd bet any company that can make compressors, could make a ventilator given the correct specs.
I might also be looking at DoD's disposal and excess inventory website. DoD throws away a lot of stuff, maybe there's something useful that's headed for the scrap heap.

(108,978 posts)of ventilators needed today -- which may be adequate at the moment -- has anything to do with how many will be critically needed in a week or two.
It would be grossly negligent of Cuomo and DeBlasio not to plan as far ahead as they could.
