Trump Promises GOP Convention Will Be Held This August

President Donald Trump said that the Republican National Convention would go forward as planned this August even as the coronavirus has caused the cancellation of large-scale events all across the U.S.

The president told Sean Hannity on Fox News Thursday night there was “no way” he would cancel the convention. “It’s going to be incredible.” He added ... “we’re going to be in a great space,” though he did not specify why he thought that.

He said that he might have a rally in Milwaukee. (The Democrats are scheduled to hold their convention, in Milwaukee from July 13 to 16) His campaign has not held any rallies because of the virus.

A convention is the only mechanism the parties have to nominate a presidential pick. If the pandemic persists, they would have to change the rules in order to hold a different type of forum.

Seriously if we’re still doing the same in August. It’s over. We can’t recover. Not hyperbole but realistic.

Even though it made me sick to even weakly agree with trump. Now? No telling. I believe we will cancel our family reunion end of July for the first time in 58 years. I think it may last that long now. I hate thinking that.

If it can be done virtually, fine, but I think that would be a tough sell to the leadership of the DNC. Conventions are multi-day advertisements for political parties, and big moneymakers.

but I don't think it can go beyond Labor Day. Kids are normally back in school then, and if they aren't, well maybe it isn't too safe to have a non-virtual convention, either.

If the GOP goes first, has a real convention, and we see C-19 cases a few weeks later out of that, it would provide justification for our having an online-only convention.
