And good for them. They deserve protection

Those people must be worked to death.

A local Kroger employee who works in billing department of the local headquarters told me that they've experienced 10,000 pickup orders in the last week. And they've done $20M more in sales in the past month. Shoppers are ordering deliveries more and more.

I can't keep up with my carts at Amazon. I create a list for a Whole Foods delivery and keep getting notices that this or that is no longer available. So I'll wait until Monday and keep out of the way of people who have to work and only have weekends off. Let them get what they need and I can take another look at availability of products on Monday.

My heart goes out to the delivery workers.

They become available so I add them back in. A few later I get notified that they're out again. So I add them to the cart and ... well, you know what I mean. It's like a comical tug of war so I finally gave up. I do have some regular onions that are sprouting. I think I"ll let them grow a few more inches and just harvest the tops for our Asian dish next week.

I am so motivated to start a garden this year. If I do I'll definitely plant scallions!

I had held off using them precisely because I don't like what I've heard about their business model/practices.

But I was at the end of my rope on grocery options. I have vulnerable people in my household and cannot afford to expose myself any more than absolutely necessary because of the risk that gets passed on to them subsequently.

I tried ordering direct from a grocery store which delivers, but they failed on about 1/4 of my items. I've tried Amazon, and I've tried ordering direct from the manufacturer when available. I know there will be a failure/non-fulfillment rate for Instacart too, but I had to try something else.

Dammit.

I just did this for next week.

Also, check things like nextdoor.com . There might be a group of volunteers in your area that can help out.

And don't give up on Instacart just yet. I can't believe the Instacart management would be dumb enough not to negotiate something that is mutually agreeable.

with at least a couple of weeks of strike benefits, I predict this strike will be rather piecemeal. Also, I would imagine that there are a fair amount of gig workers who would be agreeable to taking those jobs for at least a few weeks to make a bit of possibly under-the-table money.
