I do not have it. Delighted I don't have it, but it is ridiculous that I had to wait that long. I am still quarantined til April 2.

(82,849 posts)I hope everyone keeps in mind that news of new infections breaking today were first incubated two or even three weeks ago. Responses across the country were uneven, some places enacted strict measures early, other places lagged either hoping for the best or operating on bad information coming from our nation's leaders (i.e., Donald Fuckhead Trump).
I would say that this past weekend is when most of the country finally got serious about isolating from one another. That means we're on course for more and more bad news until April 20, at least. If things continue to get measurably worse after April 20, we'll need to recalibrate estimates. But if the rate of new infections slows after April 20, we will still have another month or more before life begins to get back to a semblance of normal.

(1,206 posts)But you're absolutely right, it's really hard to believe that we can't get this done more quickly.
From the timeline you laid out from test to results, it's almost as if a test will be irrelevant - people will start getting sick and need hospitalization before they can even find out if they have it.

(12,598 posts)wrong. Wonder how many people would not stay at home until they get results - much less after they have a negative test.

(18,402 posts)Abbott Laboratories announced Friday that the north suburban health care company is launching a new molecular coronavirus test that can produce results in as little as five minutes, the fastest turnaround time available.
The test will run on a lightweight and portable device about the size of a toaster designed to be deployed where testing is most needed, such as drive-thru screening sites or airports, the company said in a news release. Abbott plans to make the new test available next week and expects to ramp up manufacturing to deliver 50,000 tests per day, the news release said. The test can indicate a positive case in as little as five minutes and a negative case in 13 minutes, according to the Lake Bluff-based company.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued emergency use authorization for the test; this was the second coronavirus test designed by Abbott to receive this federal authorization, the company said.
The COVID-19 pandemic will be fought on multiple fronts, and a portable molecular test that offers results in minutes adds to the broad range of diagnostic solutions needed to combat this virus," said Robert Ford, Abbott president and COO, in the news release.

(63,221 posts)This is great news. Such a long turnaround time seems almost pointless, since it would be very easy to get infected in between testing and final results.

(51,646 posts)When her son's college closed down due to the virus (our whole state did--we're in CA) she drove to the college to drive him home and found that he was ill with flu-like symptoms. She tried to get him tested but her doctor said he did not meet the criteria. And then she got sick. They tested her and it took 8 days to get the results, which were negative. Then her daughter (who is in her 20s and sheltering in place with her) got sick, even sicker than her, and had trouble breathing. She took her daughter to the hospital and it was a horrifying experience. The hospital was overwhelmed and they would not let her stay with her daughter. The ER doctors did not bother with a test. They diagnosed COVID-19 without testing for it "because it would not effect the way they treated her." They simply x-rayed her lungs and saw the tell-tale signs.

(24,312 posts)and waited eight days for the results. The problem with that is it's like telling you "Congratulations you don't have the virus. At least you didn't eight days ago, anyway."

(5,528 posts)Lasted two days and I thought it was was one of my regular sinus infections, but I didn't have any draining as usual. A friend I had lunch with two days later, developed severe symptoms few days after lunch like the virus and went to his clinic. He was swabbed and sent home. Stayed home and I delivered food to him. He never was advised about his test. Will I ever be allowed to get a test? Probably not. Will I ever get an antibody test ? Probably not. I did come in contact with two recent arrivals from China at the end of January. The lady hugged me and my son. Probably too long between that and my fever though. I'm sure there's many unknowns like my situation. I've been staying in and waiting.

(1,292 posts)as she was exposed to a person who tested positive. It only took 24 hours for her to get her result. She tested negative. She had been self quarantined for about 10 days to wait for the other persons result and then to get her test. This was in Connecticut.
