I am up at 4 AM. I had fitful dreams and got up. I get breaking news reports from the Daily Mail when I turn on my computer. They range from the sublime to the ridiculous -- today the ridiculous: "Chrissy Teigen marks 10th anniversary of her breast implants with throwback photo as she admits: 'I really want them OUT"
This is why I can't sleep???? I don't even know who she is! LOL.
I suppose I am not alone feeling stress insomnia? I am on the West Coast. The next thing I will do is read what is happening on the East Coast where some of you guys are already up. I dread what I may read after the past few days.
Breathing. IN and OUT. Grateful. Thanks, DU for being here when we have a sociopath for president.
The infirm, the sick, those in pain, please know you are not alone. We are all like Natalie Portman (I think it was her) that character in V who is telling her story from behind cell walls in isolation. Or maybe Steve McQueen throwing his baseball in the hotbox in The Great Escape.
OK, now I am ready to look outside.

(57,073 posts)One thing to do when insomnia strikes, too, is to get up & do the most boring housework you can think of...or read, which often puts people in sleep mode. 👍

(9,426 posts)wants to do housework, I would let them come here ANYTIME! I am so depressed, I look around and think "That's the use? tRump is going to kill us all soon". What bothers me even more is how people act as though he is normal! He is a JOKE worldwide, only now it is not so funny. Why is his orange, ugly face on TV daily? I do not want to see him or hear from him.

(32,086 posts)Been having the "wake up at 3 or 4 AM" and can't go back to sleep" thing for weeks now. It's exacerbated by the kid next door hauling out the trash carts to the street right after I fall back asleep, and waking me up, or accidentally setting off his car alarm, like he did this morning. My sleep patterns are screwed up royally. And, this business of not being able to go out just exacerbates it. Still wake up at the asscrack of dawn, though. Sigh.

I am having some weird dreams. what's new since 2016 is waking up with a sense of dread and coming to DU to see what he's done now. these days i also very soon check the Johns Hopkins coronavirus map - edging toward 1 million confirmed globally. Then the local outlook - from zero to almost 1400 in less than a month.
it's a very intense and unprecedented time in our lives made worse by a void in leadership. you're not alone. and still i look out the window and the sun came up.

(53,342 posts)This morning I woke up at still-dark-30 and noticed a bit of a sore throat. Pollen has been bad down here for a couple of months and humidity has been unusually low so I take my allergy meds and knew this was related
But still. My mind kept going to omg. What if I have it?
Eventually dozed off again. Woke up and no sore throat
Just did my Yin Yoga. Now time for the rest of the morning routine before I head down the hallway to work

Managing this while also holding a senior position, making huge decisions about the future of our company. Furloughing some people now in an effort to manage cash flow to keep us viable when this is all over. Covering all benefits and doing lots of virtual hand holding to make sure they all get maximum help with UI, etc. Had direct personal conversation with every single person. Best employees anywhere, not one complained in the least. Had several volunteer to keep working unpaid (Not legal!).

(2,430 posts)...hubby read a news article to me about a local assisted living facility with the virus running rampant, 2 dead, staff infected. My dreams started out in that facility with me hugging people I knew (I would NEVER DO THAT!), then I moved on to a restaurant where all the doors to the lavatories had been nailed shut so you couldn't wash your hands. People were eating what appeared to be dog kibbles with their filthy hands. I went to my car and it was infested with germs. I was so glad to wake from that.

(63,912 posts)I take 10 mg. per night. It mellows me out and allows me to sleep naturally. I used to have a glass of wine, but I don't drink any more and I realize how much better I sleep as a result.
I am also taking 50 mg. of Pregabalin (Lyrica) 3 times a day. It contributes to my sleep. But since drowsiness is something it can cause, I am careful with the dosage before I drive anywhere.

(23,105 posts)i used to be asleep every night by 9:30 or 10, now it's 11 - 11:30 and I'm having to smoke 2 bowls at night to even get to sleep then. I've been smoking one bowl at night forever and it always worked to calm the anxiety enough for sleep, now I need 2. (14,154 posts)Overwhelming mental exhaustion, but limited to none - physical exhaustion because you are so sedentary and sheltered in place.
The above is the ideal equation for tossing and turning, disrupted sleep, and bouts of insomnia.

(7,529 posts)I know I've experienced being mentally exhausted but not physically, and vice-versa. Your brain might be recharging quicker and raring to go - hence dreams and overactive imagination, possibly mild paranoia that you need to get up and *do something*.

(74 posts)As a chronic insomniac, I have found that ice packs can help you sleep. In order to sleep the core body temp must drop 2 tenths of a degree to allow you to sleep. If your temp doesn't fall you don't sleep. Something that I experienced with lack of sleep is that the bowel does not rest and if you have pain of any kind and you don't sleep your pain tolerance doesn't reset either.

THC, the active ingredient in cannabis (1 of many) that can provide us the highs, is naturally occurring inside humans, that is why we can be tested for changes in the level.
Possible alternative:
OTC Melatonin works for many, but you'll likely have to keep increasing the dosage over time, fair warning, and start low on it, max 5mg if not 3mg, it is a naturally occurring inside us substance too, so it's known as safe?
Cripes, all these store and doctors office avoidance reasons, I'm down to deliveries only for the next 2 years I am figuring at this point in time?
