CDC considering recommending general public wear face coverings in public

Should we all be wearing masks? That simple question is under review by officials in the U.S. government and has sparked a grass-roots pro-mask movement. But there’s still no consensus on whether widespread use of facial coverings would make a significant difference, and some infectious disease experts worry that masks could lull people into a false sense of security and make them less disciplined about social distancing.

In recent days, more people have taken to covering their faces, although it remains a scattershot strategy driven by personal choice. The government does not recommend it.

That may change. Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are considering altering the official guidance to encourage people to take measures to cover their faces amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to a federal official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it is an ongoing matter of internal discussion and nothing has been finalized.

CDC guidance on masks remains under development, the federal official said. The official said the new guidance would make clear that the general public should not use medical masks — including surgical and N95 masks — that are in desperately short supply and needed by health-care workers.

if supply wasn't so tight. Once they are again available I think it will be a directive.

think masks will completely prevent infection (which they won’t).

today for my loved ones to wear over the masks. Don't tell me wearing masks are ill advised. If they weren't helpful, the medical community wouldn't need them.

I was out today and 50% of the people I saw had some type of mask on.

I was one of them. No strange looks. Everyone was ok with it.

But you need to separate the science - which overwhelmingly says they help - with the supply for first responders and healthcare, which trump f'd up royally.

If also helps prevent droplet spread from coughing & sneezing.

Wear a mask (wash it or get a new one daily), wash your hands, sanitize your hands, and keep your hands off your face!

Put America to work making masks for everyone else. I'm sure if they come up with interesting fabric designs we'll deal with it in a very American way.

and utterly off the cuff.

"--could lull people into a false sense of security and make them less disciplined about social distancing."

And could just as easily reinforce "social distancing" behavior and attitudes. Correct?

daughter's employer, providing home health care, was telling employees to come into work if they "had no symptoms". Late that Friday, she was notified that "work from home" was available for everyone, except nurses and others providing care.

My daughter received masks, at home, from the agency. So, yes, the MDs on staff are recommending masks for all.

Our medical providers are on the front lines and the domino effect is yet to come.

...and I agree with wearing them.

If EVERYBODY wore some kind of protective gear over our mouths at least, we would be far less likely to transmit the virus to each other and flat surfaces. I agree with the experts hear.
