Odd, isn't it? Something is seriously missing among the many websites charting COVID stats

it feels icky - a macabre form of scoreboard watching. I was very young when it happened, but I recall during the Vietnam War that the nightly news anchors would show the stats - dead, wounded, missing.

What we have today are confirmed infected, deaths - and as they pile up, we end up getting desensitized.

Each and every death - every single one - has a story. People are left behind - a life is cut short too soon. We have a president (oh, it hurts to say that) who never talks about the loss. He only talks about his popularity, his ratings, his tremendous job.

When we talk about deaths in large numbers, it seems somehow so disrespectful.

Anyway, as we continue on in this pandemic, my moods swirl and shift. Tonight, I am just sad - sad watching the numbers pile up, of all of the losses - and of the losses to come - and knowing that there are tears and grief and personal loss and heartache associated with every single one.

People will never get it that this is a really serious problem.

ignorance v. desensitization

not pretty if either happens.

to do something like when there is a mass shooting, if that's what you're getting at.

If somebody who is well known in their field passes, then there are stories of those people. That's about as much as anybody can handle at this point, both from a reporting standpoint, and the ability of readers/viewers to handle.

Perhaps some mass memorial like the 9/11 one may be erected some day, once the total is known.

and let their death be filmed and broadcast. It's one thing to hear about a death. It's another to watch helplessly as one occurs.

It is going to happen. No matter how hard the hospitals try to stop it, it will happen. Then the story will change.

You will even be feeling it way more as this goes on. Without the numbers to remind us we grow distant from the reality. We need to be fully engaged so as to have an honest reaction.

of soldiers recently killed during the nightly news. That had quite an impact on our pubic. Perhaps we need to do that now - showing name, age and town of residence.

The downstream damage from this pandemic will show in innumerable ways for perhaps a hundred years or more. Just 3-months ago we were talking about the lasting damaging due to tRump's administration and Brexit across the pond in terms of decades.

Now, the USA and the UK are dealing with double-hits like perhaps never seen before.

I hope we all look a bit past our own misery and remember those in impoverished nations who will have their own double-hit with poverty and COVID-19, and with little or no voice to be heard.........

or disease, in this case) are shown, it becomes so painful that people turn away.

I'm sad we aren't getting all the stories, but maybe it is the only way to cope right now.
