Feds order airlines to refund tickets for all corona-affected flights

The U.S. Department of Transportation has issued an enforcement notice to all commercial airlines, ordering them to promptly refund the complete cost of all tickets sold to passengers whose flights have either been canceled or significantly delayed due to the COVID-19 public health emergency.

"The department is receiving an increasing number of complaints and inquiries from ticketed passengers, including many with non-refundable tickets, who describe having been denied refunds for flights that were canceled or significantly delayed," states a U.S. DOT news release issued April 3. "In many of these cases, the passengers stated that the carrier informed them that they would receive vouchers or credits for future travel."

"This notice to remind the traveling public, and U.S. and foreign carriers, operating at least one aircraft having a seating capacity of 30 or more seats, that passengers should be refunded promptly when their scheduled flights are canceled or significantly delayed," the notice continues.

"Airlines have long provided such refunds, including during periods when air travel has been disrupted on a large scale, such as the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Hurricane Katrina and presidentially declared natural disasters. Although the COVID-19 public health emergency has had an unprecedented impact on air travel, the airlines’ obligation to refund passengers for canceled or significantly delayed flights remains unchanged."

Thanks for posting this.

I have tickets for domestic flights in late April and early May (on Delta) and several international flights in June (on United). Of course, the trips have been cancelled but I've heard nothing from the airlines.

My strategy is to let the airline cancel the flights instead of me doing so because I'd like a refund and not a voucher. Does any DUer have recent experience with cancelled trips/COVID/refunds?

Honestly, I have not flown since JAN 2001...so I am way out of the loop when it comes to airline protocol now.

Had to purchase a ticket in Feb for my daughter, who was supposed to take a big college learning delegation to South Africa. Well the organizers offered to reschedule the trip to August, but we chose the option to apply our tuition fees to going next year (hopefully)... but the glitch has been the plane ticket.

I had no idea they were non refundable...(is that new? I don't recall but never had to cancel a flight in the "old days" either...)

So I am currently working with the school travel agent to get a refund. She says they are only offering to waive fees for us to re-book. but if we dont know the dates for next year, or even IF the world will be back to normal by then, it's not possible to re-book.

Besides, I could kinda use that refund to survive since I am out of work now.

Looks like I have to just wait till the date gets closer and they officially cancel the flight ...

But now that this has happened, I am copying the link and sending it to the travel agent and having her take it up with United.

I really have no sympathy for the corporations that have been taking advantage of people for more than a decade with all the added rules and fees etc. Maybe we need some breaking down in order to rebuild how so many of these pieces of our economy were broken...

sorry, rant off....
