Yep, a full grown idiot was being a total jerk at my local Kroger today. He approached and made snide remarks to myself and at least 3 other people that I witnessed. He asked me "what are you afraid of, this isn't New York". I wasn't quick enough for a good come back, but one lady told him "no, but is America so mind your own business". I've always hated assholes, but I especially hate empowered assholes!

Saying he won't wear a mask, but he would "if he thought it was important". So some significant portion of the country will believe their "Dear Leader", ignore medical advice, and promote immediate herd immunity by culling a million or two. Then the ones who survive will say he did a fantastic job, and only X million died.

(11,361 posts)this is your own little bugaboo.
(I personally have gone about every 9th or 10th day thus far .. and I'm comfortable with that amount of caution and level of distancing) Also note that they have deliberately kept the stores open for this very reason. People are following the information they're given .. it is not a proscribed, or even a discouraged, activity. In my area we serve a population that is often coming in from considerable distance, and lack options that might be available in more urban areas. The stores themselves have made huge efforts to mitigate where they can (select hours, limiting numbers inside at one time, disinfecting each basket/cart for new arrivals, spacing in checkout lines) and a lot of these people are also on the front lines as far as providing service to the community. And one of the biggest problems they are encountering in the supply chain is with hoarding behavior. So .. if people hadn't stripped the shelves of staples, disinfectant, paper products, etc. like self-serving locusts several weeks back .. we'd all be able to select what we need, and have that much less reason to return?
Glad you're happy with your own decisions ...

(28,811 posts)my son works in a grocery store so he does all of our shopping now as I am in a vulnerable population. but his store does not have, or is out of, many of the things i want. so I tried the local Harris Tweeter and there was not a slot available for pick up. Then I tried Amazon, first Whole Foods, couldn't find what I wanted, then Fresh. I got a delivery yesterday from them, but had to revisit the page to find an available slot.

(27,830 posts)I see delivery people coming here (apartment) all day long, they've obviously been in multiple stores, some don't have masks, and they are coming into the apartment lobby all day long (even though it's locked).
If we make a weekly, quick trip to the store, keeping appropriate distancing and wearing a scarf and using sanitizer, I don't think it's worse than using a delivery person who's probably been in contact with dozens of people each day.
Tipperary
(6,930 posts)Stocked up before the order came to stay home. There were many posts here about how everyone had stocked up, but now everyone seems to be visiting the store. Yeah, there are some things I would like to have and do not, but I am not going to the store. I thought that was the whole point of staying safe. It seems everyone thinks they are the exception to the stay at home order. I saw one poster who had went on and on about how he had everything he needed earlier this month, then post a store anecdote barely a week later.
We are never going to get through this thing if we do not all follow the recommendations. I see some of the same people here calling for a national stay at home while telling grocery store anecdotes. I just find it puzzling. I truly doubt most people who post here are completely out of food. I know in better days that I would go to the store even when I had plenty to eat simply because nothing appealed to me. Now I am just trying to suck it up and eat what I have.
Maybe some just need to get out if they live in apartments. But, better to go for a walk than to the store. I wish people would stay out of the stores, the churches, Walmart, Target, and so on. I want this nightmare to end, and it will not without everyone doing their best. People are dying. This is for real.
LisaM
(27,830 posts)We really do zip in and out of the store and limit contact, and everyone in the store is doing the same. We make very few trips to the store and have a decent supply of food, but we can't go two months without replenishing some things (along with the other limitations of being in an apartment, we don't have much storage space). We haven't been to the store this week, but our strategy is to divide up the list, shop as fast as possible, and then only one of us checks out. Then we leave.
I did talk to a co-worker who's going four times a week! I couldn't believe it. (And he has a large house, no storage limitations).
i have the potential for more contact with the incessant flow of delivery people than in the actual store.
Tipperary
(6,930 posts)I have just become alarmed at all the stories here. I live in a house too, so have room for storage. I really do not eat a lot either, but I cannot help but feel some think they are immune. Human nature, I guess. I just want this to be over, the sooner the better.
LisaM
(27,830 posts)On our few walks, people move far out of the way, and smile and wave. People wait patiently at the end of the aisles in the grocery store (or do from what I've observed on my few trips). I saw on the bus yesterday that people were sitting 20 or 40 feet apart (i was not ON the bus, I just looked inside). The buses have done an amazing thing. The drivers are partitioned off, and the fare is free, so riders just need to step on through the back door and don't have to touch anything (I guess they have to pull the cord to exit, but that's about it).
I've noticed a couple of (small) groups of youngish people (20s, 30s) who don't appear to be from the same household* walking together, but they keep their distance from us. And I notice that some people don't seem to understand that it's the norm to walk against traffic if you're in a street with no sidewalks. But this is mostly pretty minor. Delivery people who are stressed also get a little close asking for directions, but it's pretty infrequent. Overall, we're doing great.
*I'm inferring that they are not from the same household from their conversations, which sound as if they are catching up on things. But i don't know for sure that they are from different households.

(511 posts)You know (maybe?) that's not what any of us were getting at. It was your statement: "I have not had any deliveries. I did a pickup at Walmart two weeks ago. I have soups, rice, beans, oatmeal, frozen stuff, pasta. It didnt even cost that much to stock up. I guess I am just surprised how many people are still going shopping al the time."
You have the privilege of:
1. Having the funds to "stock" up (even if you dismiss it as not costing that much.
2. Having transportation to be able to "stock" up. Some have to walk to the store, or use a bike. Can't carry much even if you use the bus. And no, you ain't calling a damn Uber/Lyft when that money could be spent on food.
3. Not having to worry (apparently) about using your funds to "stock" up when others have to scrape from one week to the next.
Instead of recognizing that, you drop some shrugs, a "bless your heart" and then a straw man argument. I'm not saying you're well off, but at least recognize that folks (on DU) aren't out here going to the damn store for fun and/or blatantly ignoring stay at home orders, and that you may have better circumstances than many of those you are chiding.

I think you can stay very safe, and still get groceries every week or two. Many fresh vegetables don't last that long, and can't be frozen. And there are limits on popular dry goods to prevent people from hoarding.
IronLionZion
(45,528 posts)I'd have enough to buy a nice comfortable house with plenty of storage and freezer space, a Costco membership to buy food in bulk, and a nice vehicle to transport it home. (6,930 posts)Regular fridge and freezer. I do have a nice car, but i had dogs in the car coming home from the store, the groceries did not take up that much room. Maybe I just do not eat as much as some on here. I do not drink soda, only coffee, water, tea, juice, and of course wine.
I commented simply because so many here gloated as you put it about having stocked up, only to post about going to the store a week later. This place is really funny sometimes.

(51,697 posts)I feel lucky to live in CA, although I live in a little red pocket of the state. A lot of my neighbors are Republicans and it absolutely sucks to be surrounded by those idiots. But at least I don't have to spend time with them. Almost all my coworkers have been liberals, which made work a lot more pleasant. I think I would lose my mind if I had to spend all day working with MAGAts. I'm sorry you're going through that hell.
Ohio has 5,148 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 193 deaths. That's not fake news. https://ncov2019.live/
Please take lots of zinc and Vitamin D to help fight off viruses you might be exposed to by those idiots. And Lysol the fuck out of everything they touch around you.

I wanted to...well, I just don't when I'm going to be unable to contain my rage at these cretins.
...and I'll never understand why people in the military support this chickenshit impostor who has ZERO respect for the military order or the people in it. He uses them as props an they buy in?? Unbelievable.
