They win the prize today. No one got more screwed than they.
They were forced to stand in long lines for hours, in the cold, some with masks, just to get to vote. And then, they will soon need a picture ID to vote? It sounds like the Russians are taking over Wisconsin. There is some alien force taking over the will of the majority of the people of that great state, the symbol of progressiveness. The minority find a way around the idea of democracy. And they have to prove they are Americans before they can vote?
By the rules of the road, the legislature was permitted to be led by the minority Party, because of the way the districts were gerrymandered? They appointed the majority of the Wisconsin Supreme Court. In a quick turnaround, the US Supreme upheld the Republican Wisconsin Supreme Court and ruled that they could not postpone an election, or vote by mail, and would have to proceed with the election as scheduled, even though the entire country is in the middle of a deadly epidemic.
What criminal would treat American citizens like that?
When a citizen has lost the right to vote, or to have their vote fairly counted, they have lost a basic freedom. It is a freedom guaranteed by our Constitution.
Wisconsin is just the canary in the coal mine. Either we stand up for our freedoms, and tell these people to go to hell, or we will lose everything our ancestors fought for in the last 240 years.
But wait. Be patient. The election is in November.

Anyone that is blocked from voting for their elected official should be excused from all taxes, Federal, State and Local.
Lets get back to what this country was founded on.

(7,820 posts)This is a test for November. They are seeing how hard people will push back if they are disenfranchised. How much can they get away with fucking with the General election. Oh, and lookie here- they also want to grant themselves new powers to lock people up in cases of national emergencies- including those caused by civil disobedience
Go on. Tell me Im being too cynical. I want to be wrong.

(10,176 posts)We've been the test case since they cheated Walker and this pack of vile scum into office in 2010. The so-called teabaggers, funded by the Koch's, Bradley's, Mercer's and any other scumbag with money you can think of.
This is not new, but is a long term plan to take Wisconsin. Don't forget the International Headquarters of the John Birch Society (the Koch family), was moved to Joe McCarthy's (and my) hometown of Appleton WI in the late 80's early 90's right before the Gingrich clusterfuck in Congress and the march of the radical Republican Party started.

(4,037 posts)Living in WI where I grew up is more difficult by the day. Republicans simply dont care what they say or what they do. Theyve rigged WI the way that whats his name and his cabal is rigging the country. Its honestly hard to imagine whats up their sleeve for the fall, but here, just like in DC, it seems like there is nothing that can be done about it. And please dont tell me that the vote can change things when nearly 200,000 more people voted for Democrats than Republicans in the last WI election, and yet Republicans retained control of the Senate and Assembly through corrupt, and secretly drafted gerrymandering. Here, just like at the Supreme Court, they own the majority of state Supreme Court seats. Theyve restricted our governors powers to where hes nothing more than a figurehead , while they gave Skippy Walker wide sweeping control - the most of any governor in the country at that time. Its sickening and its not representative government at work, as it is on the national scene as well.
Were fighting a very tough competitor and seem to have water in our boots.
Ill vote. Ill write letters, send email and texts. Ill contribute to our side. Ill do what I can, but this is frightening, discomforting, and sinister.

(3,131 posts)For quite a long time now. Its where republicans have been testing out new insidious ways of subverting democracy.
Yesterday was a trial run for November. Close most polling place in Milwaukee and force people to wait hours in line during a pandemic.
I have a lot of respect for the people in Wisconsin who have been fighting this crap since the scott walker sit ins.

(3,056 posts)The rethugs are always going to try to come up with slimier and slimier ideas to keep the "wrong" people (us) away from the voting booth, because as Drumpf just admitted, the more people who vote, the worse they do.
So instead of raging at the skies and wringing our hands over the latest wrinkle, how 'bout we try this. It's not like we don't have some damn wealthy people on our side of the political aisle. This is where the Bloombergs, Steyers and Soros' can come in. Instead of funding TV ads, how about paying for transportation to get folks to where they have to go to get that damned picture ID? Set up a grant fund that will pay for that ID. Lots of people looking for work right now...pay them to check voter roles to make sure people haven't been purged. We KNOW they'll shut down polling places. Run buses to take people to those remote polling places they'll replace them with. Set up phone banks to counter the lies about voting days and places. There's too much we can do, and we should start by using their own weapons (money) and tactics (scorched earth) against them.
