(11,391 posts)The poster is correct. Numbers are quite clearly coming from state (and local) health departments. (And .. are widely undercounted). End of story.

(21,649 posts)also what should be reported as victims (and maybe this is what hayes is referring to) is people WITHOUT the virus that cannot get medical care because the facilities are full. what about the people dying of heart attacks because there is no ambulance? or no bed at the hospital for their bypass??? are we counting those deaths???
BeckyDem
(8,361 posts)Potentially excess deaths are calculated by subtracting the expected number of deaths from the observed number of deaths.

(3,697 posts)Instead of 25 deaths they are seeing 250 a day. DeBlasio did say that they are working on making a presumption of death for these deaths so the CV-19 ones can be incorporated or at least reported out.

(17,990 posts)Heart attacks, strokes, etc. haven't gone away. What has become impaired is our healthcare system's ability to cope with pre-CvD-19 emergencies. In my mind, those are still CvD-19 related in many cases and ought to be added to the death toll.

(32,106 posts)Normal deaths in NYC is about 60,000 a year or about 164 a day. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080109104254.htm
Don't know where the 250 is coming from.

It was in reference to EMT and FD responses on Cardiac cases in NYC. IOW when they respond to a call and the patient is in cardiac arrest and dies. Their daily average this time last year was between 25-40 a day. Just this week they've had calls at 250 or so a day.

(12,889 posts)on the numbers. Can't be trusted at any level.
BeckyDem
(8,361 posts)The numbers are likely a significant undercount, given the limited access to testing and other constraints, state officials and public health experts say.
