He doesn't know that there's any difference at all between a bacterium and a virus. They're both just germy things.

But the doctors he talks to are just wowed by his aptitude for medicine.

There are a lot of reasonably intelligent people who regularly go to their doctors when they have a cold or the flu and ask for antibiotics. AND - there are a number of doctors who prescribe them. I had a tough conversation with a friend of mine who is as liberal as they come, and she has a two degrees past college. She doesn't like going to the doctor, so she takes whatever antibiotic she has until she feels better, stores it away so that next time she doesn't feel well she doesn't have to go to the doctor. What she takes it for (without a prescription) are colds or the flu that she just feels are hanging on to long.

That's part of the reason we have so many strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria - misuse of antibiotics to "treat" things that are not bacterial. The bacteria does figure how to outsmart it.

That is not to excuse the unbelievable ignorance of the orange idiot - he has two doctors on call who surely must have told him the difference. It's just to say that it is,unfortunately, far more than cultists who do not understand the difference between bacterial infections and viral infections.

seriously, the scientists no doubt tried to explain all about viruses and bacteria and mutations and evolution and antibiotics and all that stuff.

they kept dumbing it down because he couldn't understand it.

finally they got down to the level of, ok, it's a contest between mr. germ and mr. vaccine, and mr. vaccine was winning, but then mr. germ made a clever move and mr. vaccine is gonna take 18 months to figure out the best move!

got it mr. president?

got it!

then he goes on stage and basically regurgitates what he just learned, at the dumbed-down level. mr. germ made a brilliant move.

This is because viruses are so simple that they use their host cells to perform their activities for them. So antiviral drugs work differently to antibiotics, by interfering with the viral enzymes instead.
