South Korea reported on Friday that 91 recovered coronavirus patients have tested positive for the disease again, raising questions over health experts' understanding of the pandemic.
The prospect of people being re-infected with the virus is of international concern, as many countries are hoping that infected populations will develop sufficient immunity to prevent a resurgence of the pandemic.
The reports have also prompted fears the virus may remain active in patients for much longer than was previously thought.
Korean health officials reported Friday that 91 patients thought to have been cleared of the virus had tested positive again, up from 51 people on Monday.

(3,115 posts)This shit isn't anywhere near done or deadly. Dump and his crew can honk about how much they've accomplished but they're all girifting killers. Notice how Istanka and Damien Kushner are back behind the curtain again?
Again I pose the question: How much money do you need in hell?

(5,256 posts)"False test results could also be at fault, other experts said, or remnants of the virus could still be in patients systems without being infectious or posing a risk of danger to the host or others."
And: "Mr Kim also said patients had likely 'relapsed' rather than been re-infected."
The above theories are much more likely than a coronavirus to which immunity is not developed. Also, if no immunity were developed, you would expect far more people to have tested positive again.

(5,256 posts)I weary of the panic-ridden media reports. Especially when the headline doesn't match the story's content. They were doing this with the Italian infection and fatality statistics for a while too - the headline would be very dire, and then a read of the story would reveal that (while even one death is an unacceptable tragedy, just to be clear) the curve was actually flattening.

(21,620 posts)there was a thread just like this a few weeks ago about a woman in Japan that was supposedly reinfected but when you look at SK which tested as much as they did now saying 91 reinfections, it is FAR more likely the original or new tests were wrong that it is the person was infected again.

One thing to keep in mind is that the early tests were really unreliable, so that's one key variable here. Also, if you're talking about 91 people out of 20,000, I believe that's only 0.5% (0.005), which is much more likely to be an anomaly caused by faulty testing than anything else.

(12,397 posts)Your post makes complete sense. Sadly, the world is in panic mode right now. I do wish these announcements would come with mountains of proof, or otherwise just STFU.
I fully agree with you. And I am convinced that many of these headlines are sensationalist and designed to drive clicks. I mean, why would anything change in that regard?

(3,473 posts)Maybe this is mutating into different strains faster than thought. I've read there are already 8 different strains. Maybe immunity to one doesn't help with other strains. Maybe there are more than 8. Just speculating. I don't know shit about fuck.
