UK: Corbynite in-fighting signals death knell for Labour left-wing group Momentum

Keir Starmer’s election as Labour leader has put the skids under the party’s left-wing group Momentum.

The activist movement that propped up Jeremy Corbyn has splintered amid recriminations over the defeat of its main candidate, Rebecca Long-Bailey.

And Corbynite lieutenants such as failed deputy leadership candidate Richard Burgon, former party chair Ian Lavery and Jon Trickett, a critic of Starmer’s pro-Remain stance, have been sacked from the Shadow Cabinet.

Now a new group, Forward Momentum, has been launched in protest at a leadership it calls “too Londoncentric”.

The move is a blow to Momentum founder and chairman Jon Lansman, a key ally of Mr Corbyn.

Both friends and critics now want his resignation.

The analogy between Jeremy and Bernie, and between their supporters, is far too close for comfort as the Democratic Party heads into a gneral election in dire circumstances.

Jeremy Corbyn reminded me too much of Michael Foot, and he was a disaster for the Labour Party. Both Jeremy and Michael led the Labour Party to crushing defeats at the hands of the Tories.

I'm hoping Keir Starmer isn't in the mould of Neil Kinnock - maybe in the mould of John Smith I hope...

Beyond this, I am aware I do not know enough about UK politics to comment in any detail. Regular reading of The Guardian is no substitute for actually being there. It has been many years since I was, and even then it was not for long.
