I have got to stay off of Facebook or move the fuck out of this sick, fucked up, backward, inbred, intolerant, ignorant state.
Several people here chided me for the 'hate and greed' post I made yesterday, but OH MY FUCKING GOD, try living in this shithole and see if you don't feel the same way. JESUS H CHRIST himself could land in some of these people's front yards and tell them the truth and they would not believe it.

Ok...I feel slightly better. But I really did feel a pop in my head and I had little sparklies in front of my eyes I was getting so mad. It is like trying to explain...ANYTHING to a goddam slug. Hell, the slug probably has an intellectual EDGE over some of the people I have been talking to for the past two days.

Ok, yeah...that felt better, too.

does that cause only a minor blood vessel to pop? you ready to try to beat the amoral fuck out of me?

(9,854 posts)But I find your viewpoint short sighted. Foreign aid is a helluva sight cheaper than war.

(12,017 posts)we are too tied to them for religious and energy needs. why should pulling aid (or simply not providing aid) cause a war? what kind of war could they wage?

I was born, raised, and live in Kentucky, and I've had to un-friend a shit-load of old high school classmates for that kind of crap.

(9,854 posts)And the irony is that I have LEFT the DU for periods of time over members from bluer states ridiculing the South and southerners.
OH MY GOD, I take it BACK!
You were all right. I swear, if we EVER get on our feet I am going to get so far the fuck out of here I will need to buy a goddam parka in July.

(9,854 posts)I was born in Charleston, SC and raised in the south. It is just home and FEELS right to me. I love the fact that you can get into a discussion in the check out line at the Food Lion for ten minutes, that people still stop and talk to each other in the middle of the road, that cars stop for funerals and that kids here say 'Yes, ma'am' and 'No, sir.'
I made it through the past three elections and NEVER felt this angry that I recall. Maybe I am just getting over it. Maybe what I like is the small town feel of where we live and I just need to find a liberal small town.
Warpy
(111,383 posts)and when I'm stuck in a line or a waiting room I always talk to other people, at least the ones who aren't engrossed in some sort of electronic gadget. Boredom overcomes shyness pretty quickly. This was true in Boston as well as NM, so it's not exclusive to the south. What the rest of the country lacks is that sugar glaze all over everything that the south seems to pride itself on.
Well, you ate through the glaze and found the strychnine. I'm sorry about that, the area around Charleston is beautiful and I remember it fondly from my kidhood. It's just poisoned by too many people who have spent their lives living on inherited spite.
I lived in a small town in New England for a while and know what you mean about the small town feel, where everybody knows everybody else. You can find it elsewhere, Dixie doesn't hold the patent on it.
Whether you find an accommodation with your neighbors or decide to leave, good luck. It's not easy to be awake in an area where so many others are still dreaming.

(13,468 posts)And he decided to extol the wonders of Sarah Palin and how he couldn't wait to vote for her, cast his first ever vote for a Republican AGAINST Obama, in fact (he didn't much mention McCain for some reason).
Then my head exploded, and so did my mouth. The man was dumbstruck, I really don't think he expected me to go TOTALLY FUCKING OFF. On the way home my husband said how embarrassed he was and I told him if he had that much of a problem with me then we could get a divorce and settle that. He got struck silent too. We're still married, LOL.
South Carolina is a beautiful state, I love little palmetto trees. I keep hoping the South will just get over its racist self so we can all move on and come together as a country. It's sad that a lot of goodness in people has been buried by racist and intolerant right wing religion combined with fear-mongering, poverty, and too little access to education. I curse myself a lot for not getting the hell out of Kentucky when I was young. A LOT!

I've got lots of progressive friends and the occasional Repub/Teabagger and a handful of Indies. We agree on some, disagree on others but we respect each other's turf.
Let me know and I'll friend ya in a NY minute.

(9,854 posts)I came so close to firing him today.
We are about 1/2 hour south of Charlotte in what used to be John Spratt's district. Up until recently I never really noticed it being THAT bad here. But the past few weeks have been pretty brutal. I just went over my wall and realized that what I think is happening is that the farrier and the handful of people that are hammering me day in and day out are all buddies and they must see each other post and jump in. I don't think they are planning it or anything, but sometimes it feels like they are tagging off.

(17,651 posts)There are some truly unhinged people where I am but there are some real gems too. Seek out the gems, leave the dust.
Some people have no home training - respect each others opinions and/or disagree without coming off as batcrap crazy or overly defensive.
Use your FB options so the suspects can't see what you say, delete every unhinged comment or just continue to post rebuttals and counter proof to their nonsense.

Take each statement apart by asking analytic questions about specific words that they use.
Show that you aren't angry and that really freaks them out.

(9,854 posts)I do that. I copy and paste their posts to me and dissect them like a freaking surgeon. I use bullet points. I have a cache of articles and websites I use to refute the INSANITY.
And I swear, never do they bother to use a SINGLE fact or a SINGLE link. They would never survive here. And if you ask for a link or any kind of proof of what they are saying, they just ignore you. And I mean, I spend what seems like A LOT of time arguing with about 7-8 different people about this shit. My theory is that while THEY are never going to change their mind, somebody reading the conversation just might.
I don't want to sound too dramatic, but it is really taking a toll on me. Some of these people are business associates and some are neighbors and some are people I think of as friends. I might have to just tell them that we have to just stop. Cause I am really getting to the point where I cannot separate the people from their ignorant, ugly, uninformed political viewpoints.

(47,992 posts)I hope you keep them as FB friends.
I have been Hiding a few friends' posts on FB lately, to keep myself from getting depressed.
I have also given up on some and un-friended them and even blocked a few. On a whole, I think it IS better to keep them if it doesn't bug you toooooo much. You may be the only informed and, hence, rational person they know.

(1,362 posts)Apparently, we should be nice to lying repuke pieces of crap for year after year of their lies so one day, hopefully, the ahole repukes will pretend to have a change of heart.
Just take a deep breath and the sparklies go away and I strongly suggest avoiding repukes in all walks of life. Let the mental case repukes figure things out for themselves, it's not your job as a citizen to provide online mental health assistance to every delusional, sociopath, psychopath or compulsive liar.
