A 'Lehman moment'

A 'Lehman moment'

By Steve Benen

It's been largely forgotten, but in the spring, there was a difficult diplomatic incident involving Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng. While delicate negotiations were underway, Mitt Romney jumped in, condemned U.S. officials during their tense diplomatic talks with China, and blasted the "day of shame for the Obama administration."

Soon after, the criticisms looked ridiculous, and even Bill Kristol said Romney appeared "foolish." The Republican candidate, unconcerned with the international implications, thought it'd be smarter to attack first, then get the facts, and then think it through.

Sound familiar?

<...>

Romney's decision to attack President Obama over Guangcheng fits the model, but the smear involving violent mobs in Libya and Egypt is worse -- not only is it practically a textbook example of a gamble gone horribly awry, but it's unfolding in the campaign's final stretch.

The inexperienced Republican, whose campaign dismissed foreign policy as a "distraction" on 9/11, has managed to look craven, dishonest, and incompetent, all at the same time. Worse, Team Romney managed to pull off this trick twice -- once last night, then again this morning.

Mitt Romney's statements combine callousness and ineptness in one ugly package. His remarks did not help, questions the patriotism of the U.S. embassy in Egypt and of the President. This is something that the Right would have skewered a Democratic candidate over during the Bush administration.

For now, we should mourn the dead and hope that the situation can be calmed down. We do not need political opportunism here.

There is already a lot of negative reaction to Romney's remarks. From Buzzfeed:

Foreign Policy Hands Voice Disbelief At Romney Cairo Statement
“Bungle… utter disaster…not ready for prime time… not presidential… Lehman moment.” And that's just the Republicans.

Mitt Romney's sharply-worded attack on President Obama over a pair of deadly riots in Muslim countries last night has backfired badly among foreign policy hands of both parties, who cast it as hasty and off-key, released before the facts were clear at what has become a moment of tragedy.

Romney keyed his statement to the American Embassy in Cairo's condemnation of an anti-Muslim video that served as the trigger for the latest in a series of regional riots over obscure perceived slights to the faith. But his statement — initially embargoed to avoid release on September 11, then released yesterday evening anyway — came just before news that the American Ambassador to Libya had been killed and broke with a tradition of unity around national tragedies, and of avoiding hasty statements on foreign policy. It was the second time Romney has been burned by an early statement on a complex crisis: Romney denounced the Obama Administration's handling of a Chinese dissident's escape just as the Administration negotiated behind the scenes for his departure from the country.

"They were just trying to score a cheap news cycle hit based on the embassy statement and now it’s just completely blown up," said a very senior Republican foreign policy hand, who called the statement an "utter disaster" and a "Lehman moment" — a parallel to the moment when John McCain, amid the 2008 financial crisis, failed to come across as a steady leader.

The Huffington that a lot of media figures are reacting poorly to Romney's remarks, on a day that may be a disaster for his campaign.

Mitt Romney Response To LPost reports ibya, Egypt Attacks Called 'Irresponsible,' 'Craven,' 'Ham-Handed'

The Huffington Post | By Jack Mirkinson Posted: 09/12/2012 10:37 am Updated: 09/12/2012 12:00 pm

Many members of the media reacted with puzzlement and criticism to Mitt Romney's continuing criticism of the White House response to the deadly attacks in Libya and Egypt.

The Romney campaign drew fire on Wednesday morning for issuing a blistering statement condemning the American embassy in Egypt for speaking against an incendiary anti-Muslim film, even though the embassy made the statement before any attacks had taken place. NBC's Chuck Todd, for instance, called the statement "irresponsible" and a "bad mistake."

This is a day for mourning and national unity, not partisan attacks.
