Dr. Anthony Fauci Shuts Down Laura Ingraham's 'Misleading' Coronavirus Claim

“They’re really different,” Fauci said when the Fox News host tried to compare the coronavirus to HIV or SARS.

“The idea that we are definitely going to have a vaccine, we didn’t really approach much else in the same way as we are pegging going back to normal with a vaccine. Did we?” Ingraham asked.

Fauci, who has worked on responses on epidemics for several presidents, took umbrage with the comparison, telling the host the coronavirus was a different beast entirely and was “unprecedented” in its rate of transmission.

“We don’t have a vaccine for HIV/AIDS, but we have spectacularly effective treatment,” he said. “People who invariably would have died years ago right now are leading essentially normal lives. SARS is a different story. SARS disappeared.”

snip===================================================================

“I think it’s a little bit misleading maybe to compare what we are going through now with HIV or SARS,” he added, “they’re really different.”

Ingraham continued to press Fauci about SARS, asking if that disease disappeared, “this could as well, correct?”

“You know, anything could, Laura, but I have to tell you the degree of efficiency of transmissibility of this is really unprecedented in anything that I’ve seen,” he said. “It’s an extraordinarily efficient virus in transmitting from one person to another.”

“Those kind of viruses don’t just disappear.”

If he were overly combative, the Fox audience would probably just shut him off. I think he'd rather have them listening.

Efficient ones stay and kill people. Lots of people.

Think of it as a Reverse Trump. Despite his utter incompetence, he persists.

If a virus is not infectious enough, it dies out. SARS and MERS were more deadly but not as infectious. If the virus kills its host too quidkly, it doesn't get as much chance to infect.

Flu is very infectious, but not very deadly.

One is universally transmissible, the other required specific behavior. HIV is not something you could get by walking in crowds. Ignorant woman should know that, as most of the public does.

It seems to me she's saying that (1) We're talking about COVID-19 as if we're going to find a vaccine and POOF, everything will go back to normal; and (2) We didn't say the same thing about other viruses, including SARS (which is, after all, another coronavirus).

So it sounds like she's raising doubts about the scenario, and suggesting that things aren't going to be resolved so cleanly or easily. Interestingly, that doesn't jibe with RW talking points very well. Maybe she's actually had an insight for once. Broken clocks and all ...

She doesn't even have basic communication skills but heck, I guess they're good enough for FAUX news.
