all the craziness over the last few days and the shitstorm thats ahead of us? I was an armorer during my six years in the USMC and have always since then held the opinion that very few people should be allowed to own a gun - I mean VERRRRY few, including law enforcement.
Not asking for comments on my sidetracked ramble - focus on the original question please.
I could elaborate, but I'm following your instruction.

(12,618 posts)It's a tough decision, and I hear what your'e saying and pretty much agree with you. These assholes have been threatening us for DECADES and lately they are actually putting people's lives at risk. And they've shown a clear willingness to disregard truth or logic.
I hate the AR-15. I hate what its done to our classrooms and our sense of security. But the thing that really bothers me is I'm toying with the idea of getting one. Not to protect me against the government, the police, the deep state, the black helicopters, or anything like that. I'm considering getting one to protect me from these idiots out here that are constantly waving theirs in my face and making threats with it. The last place I ever want to be is a world where these idiots are calling the shots and backed up by their guns.
If I felt I could trust law enforcement or the military to do the right thing, I wouldn't be so worried. But given that so many of them seem to be sympathetic to these clowns, I no longer feel I can rely on them to do the right thing. So basically it's either trust the police to protect me from them, or arm myself.
Shitty situation all around.

Like you, I can't stomach the Ar-15.....or any of the other weapons dear to the right.
Good guys carried the m1.

(10,435 posts)Had them since I was 14, they were used for hunting. I've never seen any need to buy anything else. The shit going on these days did cause me to bring them in out of the garage storage and put them in the storage box under my bed. Which is where I hope they stay.

They have trained to protect you.

(2,196 posts)The military won't be involved for quite a while. The police do not have any duty to protect you. where I live it is probably 2 hours or more before they would show up.. Have already been told by officers that we are pretty much on our own out here...

(923 posts)Still own a few rifles and a shotgun, family guns passed down through the ages. I'm just the caretaker. They will be pass on when the time comes.
Did get shotgun out and bought a case of shells. The police wont show up if social disruption happens. Look to the Rodney King riots as an example.
The wife has been advocating for a handgun for the last 3 years. Have to say that after today I'm of the mind to get her one.
Enough knuckleheads around that its not inconceivable....
So much for the golden years.

(19,258 posts)I was just in the backyard yesterday showing my 10-yr old daughter how to load, operate and fire a semi-automatic rifle.
She was pretty good, actually. I may build her one of her own when she's older.
I classify myself as a liberal prepper, and have for close to 20 years. My fear? Long term societal breakdowns and unrest due to climate change.
If even half the climate predictions about where we're heading are correct, my daughter as a 40 yr old adult will look back on 2020 as the good old days. The collapse of a functioning ecosystem will cause hundreds of millions of deaths in the 21st century, if not more. Therefore, I want her to have certain skill sets, gun use being just one (and not even the most important) of them.
Next week we'll be planting the gardens together, and building a new greenhouse. In a couple weeks our hens will be hatching chicks, and we can start fishing again. This summer we'll be canning more fruits and vegetables than ever. Skill sets.

(27,572 posts)Big difference is I own one solely for protection. And even though I was an extremely good shot (from childhood) I took all the necessary defensive,.offensive and carry courses.
Why, when I don't like guns?
For one, I live in Texas and I don't trust the government to protect me and my family against possible racist/white supremacist threats here.
This is doubly true in the current crisis.

I have thought about it. Pink Pistols looked interesting to me when I looked into them a long time ago, but there were no local chapters. Not many organized gays in the Bible Belt. We are too busy having rights denied left and right.

(3,282 posts)Two semi-auto .22 LRs, a bolt action 7MM mag, pump action 16 and 12 gauges, and a .40 Glock pistol. Where I live it is mandatory. We have a worsening drug problem and my county doesn't have any police on duty after around midnight.
I'll likely buy several more, including an AR if I find any I think are a good deal. The one thing that would be a massive mistake would be to let any of our personal politics create a situation where only one side is adequately armed and it be the side trending to fascism.

Last year I finally capitulated, and accepted an old Russian SKS as a gift. It's been locked up ever since.
It's the meth mob around here that changed my outlook. They blame Mexicans but the Aryan Knights are in cahoots with them. It's a pseudo race war with both sides making the connections and deals from prison.
