https://www.propublica.org/article/millions-of-essential-workers-are-being-left-out-of-covid-19-workplace-safety-protections-thanks-to-oshaEven as the federal worker-safety agency has been inundated with complaints, it has rolled back safety standards and virtually eliminated non-health care workplaces from government protection.
As news emerged that the novel coronavirus was infecting hundreds of workers in meatpacking plants, Gregoria Rivas began worrying that her chicken processing facility in North Carolina wasnt doing enough to protect workers like her from the virus.
There was no social distancing, she said. Everywhere she went at the Case Farms plant, there were dozens of workers crowded into a small space. In the locker room, where everyone put on their uniforms. On the cutting line, where she spent eight hours slicing chicken breasts. In the cafeteria during lunch. Even at break time, when workers lined up to use the bathroom.
I tried to bring my own face mask that I had bought at the pharmacy, but they wouldnt let me wear it, said Rivas, 31. When they wouldnt let me wear my own mask, I went to the nurses station at the plant, and they said there were no masks available. (Mike Popowycz, vice chairman of Case Farms, said its taking the pandemic very seriously and has taken several measures to protect workers.)

Note: Shortened "Workplace" in title to fit OSHA in to provide context.

(11,885 posts)And now he's forcing red state Governors to order people back to work prematurely knowing it'll increase the spread of this deadly virus. When it takes off again he's sentencing these medical people even more . Of course when it does he'll dismiss it calling it fake news.

(3,131 posts)This is Trumps fault and the department heads that he nominated or more likely temporarily appointed.
Article has lots of details on the pressures OSHA is under politically as well as decisions to prioritize healthcare workers give the lack of protective gear. Trump still isnt doing enough to address the shortages.
It also describes what happened with prior diseases (increase enforcement) versus now (decrease enforcement).
It also points out thing OSHA should have done better.
I came away mad at the Trump administration, not so much at OSHA. Id suggest changing the thanks to trump. OSHA gets enough calls for it to be reduced.
Thanks for another interesting article to read tonight.
