Contamination at CDC lab delayed rollout of coronavirus tests

The failure by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to quickly produce a test kit for detecting the novel coronavirus was triggered by a glaring scientific breakdown at the CDC’s central laboratory complex in Atlanta, according to scientists with knowledge of the matter and a determination by federal regulators.

The CDC facilities that assembled the kits violated sound manufacturing practices, resulting in contamination of one of the three test components used in the highly sensitive detection process, the scientists said.

The cross contamination most likely occurred because chemical mixtures were assembled into the kits within a lab space that was also handling synthetic coronavirus material. The scientists also said the proximity deviated from accepted procedures and jeopardized testing for the virus.

for the last 3 plus years that all competent people at the CDC have likely left for jobs at Universities and on medical research staff in private companies. For the last 3 plus years, funding for the CDC has been decreased, meaning no new state of the art labs, state of the art equipment and also no payraises. Since Trump took over the CDC has been running around trying to put bandages on gaping wounds.

Over the last three plus years, I doubt many competent people stayed on, given the job opportunities people like them can command. Why stick around and be constantly attacked, constantly dealing with funding cuts, basically being viewed as a worthless agency by an ignorant Trump.

The amateurs in the WH epitomized by Jar-Jar killed the tools that would have alerted them in time for a measured but powerful response in time.

They blew off the 68-page Pandemic Preparedness plan of 2016 that Susan Rice called Pandemics for Dummies.
They fired/redeployed/disbanded the WH pandemic group in 2018.
They fired their medical-scientific officer watching in China in summer 2019.
They disregarded the Intelligence Community (they hate IC) who told them of the outbreak Nov 2019.
