(740 posts)crisis and the failed attempt to rescue them. President Carter addressing the nation and saying I take full responsibility for the failure of the mission. He was a real President and a good man. Today we get Trump and I take no responsibility. Typical Republican take credit for anything good that happens even when they had nothing to do with it and take no responsibility for the bad things that they caused.

Carter at the 1978 White House Jazz Festival, with Dizzy Gillespie and Max Roach.
They had just played (what else?) 'Salt Peanuts'.

(21,674 posts)As you know, he was also a good friend to artists when it came to policy: his arts funding budgets (NEA, NEH, etc.) are still a high-water mark, in real terms.

(21,674 posts)Thank you for that. Really gives added depth to the photo.
And what a contrast with the current occupant of the White House.
The last time Cheeto planted anything, it was probably evidence against a business rival back in his Fat Tony Salerno days.

(1,606 posts)Once you have grasped that, TRY to imagine:
(1) how that experience shaped him;
(2) what his thoughts might--or must--be or have been across the sweep of years;
(3) what immortal power and control is required to remain dignified and above the fray;
(4) how his example, increasingly as an element of history, will shape or inform the future.
This is far more than a picture. It's a gut check and contemplation of our national societal soul.
Thanks for posting. Beautiful.

(23,158 posts)How could 2 presidents be more different than he and drumpf. One man is totally committed to helping people thrive in this hard world and one is responsible for 45,000+ deaths and the number is growing, purposefully on his part, daily. How could Americans get so bad, so absolutely fucking selfish and murderous in the last 50 years? Answer - organized right wingers aka the richest of the oligarchs have been pushing this stupidity for 100 years and it paid off in 2016 and now they are intent on stealing the whole world and implementing their desired barons/serfs model of society. Guess which we will be?
