(63,221 posts)is not an obvious government hit? It just happens too often for it to be a coincidence. Especially when you consider the background of these people who are supposedly committing "suicide". Putin is evil to the core. I wouldn't be surprised if we started seeing the same kind of thing over here soon.

(58,785 posts)And in others they apparently find ambiguity perhaps even more terrorizing than certainty, like this one. And when they don't want people to know, they use other techniques. Don't seem like people who'd waste a good pandemic when it could be used to hide murders of people who've become nuisances.
Apparently, though, Russia currently wants to send a clear and unmistakable message to officials in former Soviet Union nations by murdering the mayor of Prague. From yesterday:
His comments come after the Czech weekly Respekt reported Hrib and Prague 6 district Mayor Ondrej Kolar had been singled out by Russian intelligence for poisoning with a deadly toxin. ...
Respekt quotes unnamed security sources as saying a suspected Russian intelligence officer arrived in the Czech capital three weeks ago on a diplomatic passport and with a suitcase containing ricin.
Hrib stirred ire in Moscow for backing a decision to rename the square in front of the Russian Embassy in Prague after the slain Kremlin critic Boris Nemtsov. ...

I can see how that would do it.

(63,221 posts)in this country. I have no doubt about it. Politicians, journalists and other "political enemies" will end up being statistics. Even civilians who don't toe the line. It's frightening to see how easily they can just kill anyone who displeases them.
Trump absolutely has this in his nature. And if he wins he will become a complete dictator. Democracy will be dead. This is a fight for the soul of our nation. There has never been a more important election in the history of this country and we have to make sure that it is a fair one.

(58,785 posts)It's certainly a thought. Our history and culture, though, are extremely different from Russia's long one of authoritarian rule and murder. We haven't ever had anything like that. Widespread murder would require power and oppression strong enough to get away with it in a nation that had never knuckled to that.
But some secret murders and pretend-legal disappearances into prisons, cheered by their "base," and the DoJ filled with even more of their people and also afraid to act? If they continue in power, and given their actions so far, of course people like McConnell and company, and Trump, would not be beyond it.
And Russia is influencing the Republicans. It's played a big role in furthering the corruption of the Republican Party, Republican leaders have adopted increasingly fascistic attitudes and tactics to get and keep power, and a relationship has developed between some Republican leaders and Russia as they work to take out their common Democratic Party threat.
And now we have the evidence of the refusal of Republican leaders to try to contain or mitigate SARS-2, leading to pandemic. My best guess is they may have opportunistically hoped its disruption would create opportunity to keep power, and still do. They probably underestimated the economic costs, and the virus itself, but many deaths were expected from the beginning.
