Giving the IRS my bank account information. What would stop them from one day just taking out the money someday?

(8,144 posts)they do suddenly ever take the money without warning, call the advocate listed In the material they send you immediately. They will only take it for back taxes and you will get a bill for them first. Usually, you have time to make a payment plan. The advocate system is good. You do get warned so always open their letters.
Advocates can get the money back for you.

So they did..called the bank to stop the payments....and soc/security business..
They told me the government had gone directly into that account, without any preamble and took
whatever was there...That's kinda spooky...

People who do paper checks annoy the heck out of me too - so inefficient and fraught with potential problems.

(32,729 posts)especially considering that trump likely cut funding for securing IRS site data. The form asks for all your identity info, including full SSN, address, bank numbers, etc.
Make sure you have alerts and 2 factor authentication set up on your bank account. Freezing credit is a good idea as well.

(90,779 posts)Some 40 years ago my recently-ex husband decided that he didn't need to file a tax return because the business had failed and he didn't owe anything and hey I need another drink. Or something.
Guess who got a pink slip from the bank saying her savings got garnished? Because of course we had filed jointly during our marriage.
Oh, the IRS knows how to find you.
