Which is puzzling since she died in 2018. Her tax return in 2019, done by her son, clearly indicated deceased, but they sent it anyway. Go figure.

(51,611 posts)The same thing happened to someone I know whose husband died 13 months ago. She got $2,400. I told her not to spend it. She said she won't but also will not voluntarily send it back. She hates tRump and she isn't making it easy for them.

(4,533 posts)I think it may take more time to process a tax return than we think. Even though a tax refund is issued the IRS may still need more time to complete processing the return. I once had to know when a tax was assessed by the IRS to determine if I could still amend it to get a refund. The date of assessment was about six weeks after I filed the return.

My tax lady told me not to send it back and to just put it away and wait till they want it back because its much less of a hassle. Eventually they wrote a letter demanding to have it returned. I returned it thinking that was the end. Nope. They wrote me again telling me to pay them. It took months to straighten out their stupid mistake.
