The monthly grocery shop--Part I

(we still have stuff we have to get at Wal Mart, but we made the trip to the grocery store, so Part II tomorrow)

Monadnock region of New Hampshire

Max # of people allowed in the store at one time: 120. There was a line waiting outside the door. People doing pretty well at social distancing.

I would say that about 85% of the customers and 95% of the employees were wearing masks. 95% of employees wearing gloves, maybe about 10% of the customers.

The aisles were marked one-way. Most people complying.

NOT STOCK (only the stuff on our shopping list)

Yeast
Ground Beef
Jimmy Dean breakfast sausage links
Chicken leg quarters
Lysol disinfectant spray
Disinfectant wipes

MINIMAL STOCK:

dishwashing liquid
toilet paper (only the expensive stuff on the shelves--we usually just buy store brand)
bleach

I've been in three stores this week (Walmart Supercenter, Walmart Neighborhood Market, and local regional grocery chain). Both Walmarts were fairly picked over for chicken, pork and chicken). There was lots of empty space. Staples like ground beef, pork chops, and chicken breast were low. There was plenty of chicken thighs and higher cost beef, like Tbones, strips and brisket.

Then, I go to the local chain. Levels weren't normal, but I was able to get a good assortment of the meats were eat pretty regularly. Spent about $150.

I have no idea how the local guy had more to choose from than Walmart.

My father-in-law is a cattle farmer, and currently has about 600 head. Twice in the last six weeks, he sold two loads of cattles to feed lots, where cattle are "finished off" (fed lots of corn) before slaughter. He said he had to work harder than usual to find a buyer. Once he did, it took him longer than usual to find trucks to transport the cattle to the feed lots, and he's having to wait longer to get on the trucks' schedules. So...at least for his small piece of the cattle supply chain, it's sluggish.
