BBC: Why your health may never be the same after Covid-19

A worrying picture'
Doctors here are leading a major research project involving hospitals and universities across Scotland looking at the long term consequences of Covid-19.

For a small number of people, particularly those who have been treated in intensive care, a worrying picture is emerging of patients with lung, kidney or heart damage.

He said: "We are concerned in the respiratory profession that we are seeing the start of a new lung condition which is post-Covid lung disease. There are a small proportion of patients who will be left with chronic lung conditions as a result of Covid and will require treatment

8. the schoolchildren, whilst almost none will die, will act as super-spreaders

We have had almost all our schools here (Sweden) under high school level open the whole time, and have had zero deaths in the entire country under 20 years of age, only 13 total deaths (5 between 20 and 29yo, 8 between 30 and 39yo) under 40 years of age. The old age cohorts have been hit hard though, 87% of all deaths have been 70yo and up, 95% 60yo and up.

I'd bet this virus hinders reproductive ability in the young. Very unfortunate.

I haven't heard of this one.

Certainly, maintaining six feet of distance will hinder reproduction, but that's social, not medical.

9. And none of these post covid deaths will be counted... just like in Puerto Rico

The official numbers in Puerto Rico still only reflect those who died from the hurricane and ignore all those who died as a result of lack of clean water, electricity, medical care, or depression. The Covid19 numbers should be measured using number of dead above expected based on recent history of all cause mortality

12. The new pre-existing condition

I've been wondering about this. There was some early indications that people with covid19 would suffer debilitating long-term health problems.

This is sure to be a problem for our for-profit health insurance system. They will want to no part of the life-long expenses that will now be calculated in by their actuaries for these 100s of thousands of people. Maybe even the asymptomatic people too.

There is already an anticipation that premiums are going to go way up as they have incurred massive costs and lost income from voluntary and routine procedures that had to be cancelled. Shareholders and executives need to be made whole first!

Hopefully, it will show how badly this system favors the companies who take their cut before any healthcare is administered while denying coverage and cutting costs that don't help their bottom line.

We need a model of the British NHS now more than ever.
