On our drive to visit a relative who lives in rural-ish Ohio (it's about 1 hour out from Columbus), Trump yard signs stood front of one house after another. I see flagpoles with Trump flags (if you live in the midwest you know people put flag poles in their front yards -- odd midwest quirk, I guess). These people probably never read newspapers. They have no fucking clue how screwed they are.

(32,086 posts)Granted, I don't get out much these days. But, I do put in 3-4 miles of walking around the neighborhood on a regular basis. So far, only one house with Trump signs, and one of the two signs is falling over. Hasn't been an attempt to fix it in at least a week. Trump bumper stickers are rare, too. Unfortunately, I don't think it's any indication of how people will vote in November.

(32,011 posts)NE Ohio here, we've been hit hard with Covid-19.
I see maybe one or two houses within 5 miles of me with Dump yard signs. I have not see a red MAGAt hat on anyone since last year.

It is my theory that the inability of the people in rural areas to make sound political decisions is that the level of education in rural areas is generally far lower than in urban areas. The rural schools fail to provide their students with functioning bullshit meters.
The thing about smart people is that they seem like crazy people to dumb people.

(42,282 posts)However, for generations the "best and brightest" have been encouraged to "go to college, move to the city, make something of yourself". And farm folk tend to be conservative by nature--they take their meaning from continuing tradition; nothing wrong with that. However, they have watched their traditions downgraded and insulted for generations, as well, as big agriculture moved in and jobs moved out. It is natural in such circumstances to become resentful, especially when you are told by politicians that it's all the fault of those "big city liberals who don't understand honest folk like you". Soothing lies.
I left the small town/rural area I grew up in 40+ years ago but still have contact with it. Love some of the people, hate the culture that has developed.

(17,553 posts)Teaching kids how to spell or how to solve an equation but they are not giving them the tools to learn to think for themselves. Republicans consider that the only valuable education for the working classes is vocational. We need to be able to keep their toilets flushing and their cars running. Any more than that and we become a danger.
I live in a poor rural county. I grew up here, left to make a living and returned to retire. When I grew up there were dozens of schools, serving local communities. I rate the old system as very good. I left the rural school in my senior year. My senior class was about 40 students, in that group I placed third in the senior placement testing. I moved to a mega school in an urban area for my senior year, and I was still in third place among a senior class of around 500. The local schools have since been consolidated into a single massive school that fails to meet the minimal goals for even a vocational education. They are failing even under the lowered expectations of 20 years of Republican led state government. They did not consolidate the system to improve the value of the education the kids received, they did it strictly to save money.
The federal and state governments have gutted public education and want it replaced with corporate education where each child gets the education that their families can afford.

(6,040 posts)trump would get over 70% of the popular vote. I can count about 7-8 houses within a 2 mile radius that 'proudly' display trump flags. One house has a large trump flag with a smaller American flag which assures be where things stand with him.
My neck of the woods may be placed on suicide watch when Joe Biden wins in November. I hope it isn't because I'd like to see how it plays out.
