Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsJust for grins, after doing my shopping at the supermarket this morning,
I waited for about 10 minutes in my car to do a little people watching. One of the interesting things I discovered is that men who drive big 4WD pickup trucks don't wear masks. I watched while four such men entered their trucks in the parking lot, and there was not even one of them wearing a mask. I was near the exit from the store, so I watched people come out. Those without masks, I watched more closely.
The correlation of full-sized pickup trucks and maskless men was 100%. I guess it's not manly to protect yourself and others against the virus. Who knew?
In the store, it looked like about 75% of shoppers had masks on.
Hmm...

(10,885 posts)just as easily apply to a macho-man who won't wear a condom either. No mask = no condom; you can bet on it. It's that 'tude that makes for an early death.
BunnyMcGee
(463 posts)That means no condoms when with their illicit love interests (straight or gay), then not being tested, no using a seatbelt while in their monster trucks, DUI, passing over double solid lines on the road to pass another vehicle, not checking the parachute before the jump, swimming in notorious shark infested waters during mense cycle, staring down the loaded gun barrel at the wrong time. The list is endless, and when not affecting innocent people, kinda makes me smile.

I own a pickup, too, but it's a little Ford Ranger, and I rarely take it to the supermarket, unless my wife has our other car.
Right now, the Ranger's bed is full of a winter's worth of fallen branches, waiting to be taken to the chipping yard to be turned into compost. I'll do that this week.

(31,261 posts)It is just when I see that someone is clearly wrong and being an asshole about it, I don't give a shit about what they think or want. Now, if a person is sincerely confused or is trying but don't get it, I take time to work with such people. Clear enough???????
EarnestPutz
(2,120 posts)....not wearing masks", I took the "only noticed" to mean that you would have not been aware of what they might be thinking, drawing a contrast to my experience and response. I see that I must have been wrong to think that "only noticed" meant that, as you now tell me that you are not just aware of others, but "acutely aware".
Please remember that you responded to my post. You did this, I believe, to draw a distinction between me and you. Is that true? Why did you respond to my post if not to compare your presumably better response to a situation to my response?
In an effort to be "clear enough", I'll restate my question. Why did you respond to my post as you did?
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)It isn't noseyness, I just have that natural tendency to be acutely aware of my surroundings at all times. So I notice people that both have on masks and don't have on masks. I often look at all those people's faces to try to gauge what their basic disposition is, you can tell a lot from a person, facial expressions, at least the parts that are viewable. What I have seen consistently from people that were not wearing masks was what I took as an air of arrogance, my mind immediately go into "fuck them" mode and I could care less if they fell into a deep hole.
EarnestPutz
(2,120 posts)....I think I now understand that you would not "only notice" the lack of masks, but also, like me, be aware of the dirty looks from these two guys. Or, in your case, be "acutely aware". Am I right in thinking that you responded to my post to point out that you feel that you are less concerned about the opinions of others than me? More perceptive of their "basic dispositions" and quicker to dismiss their "arrogance"? Forgive me, but I'm still trying to understand why you responded to my post as you did.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)I have no idea whether I am quicker than you at discerning people, I don't know you, so I am in no position to guage your level of perception. I am just saying that I have a very quick "fuck assholes" trigger.

I went shopping with him for first time since this and noticed he is still touching products he doesnt buy. I really dont think he knows he is doing it, a grocery habit we all have or had. (32,006 posts)I always have to remind Mr. O to take his mask and his phone when he leaves the house. He tends to be very absent minded. He's slowly getting better, though. When the quarantine first started, I gently reminded him that shaking hands with a guy in the store he hadn't seen in a while wasn't a good idea. He says it's impossible to remember 100% of the time. I said, try harder! We keep a bottle of hand sanitizer in the car and use it any time we have been in a public place.

During the height of the pandemic so far about 50/50 white folks of either sex masked
Shockingly tho only about 1 in 10 native Americans are masked and at times they will be the majority of shoppers at Wal Mart
MineralMan
(146,317 posts)We have a rather harsh climate in the winter. However, not "everyone" drives a 4WD here, by any means. In fact, the percentage in a typical parking lot is maybe 25% on any given day.
It's not really 4WD. It's the big-ass pickup, really. That's what I was noticing. I wasn't looking at people in Subarus, which are all AWD, if I'm not mistaken. I wasn't looking at everything with all-wheel drive at all. Just big-ass pickup trucks. There are many, many of those around here, most of which are never driven off the paved roads.

(1,648 posts)The Democratic Party should be making masks with bold clear lettering on them saying,
'Trump & Republican FAILURE Protection'
Or any other damaging message, since so many people latch onto bumper sticker slogans. One of the billionaire Dem supporters could even set up an operation across the country to make and hand out masks for free or a minimal price. It would be funny to see some idiot with a MAGA hat wearing one of the masks, because they got it for FREE!
Seriously, the more people that see it, the more it will sink in for them and turn their ire onto Trump and republicans. Especially when things get even worse in Red States and the economy tanks even more. Trump wants to ignore the virus and throw everything open right away, because he knows the economy will get much worse... Trump knows that he has been completely AWOL for 4-5 months and doesn't have a clue how to resolve COVID-19. That is why he pushed it all the responsibility on Governors. Because Trump only knows how to 'play' fake reality on tv and is a dismal pathetic failure in real life.

(32,086 posts)Besides, Dear Leader won't wear one, so they're not going to, either.
FWIW, I have noticed the same thing during my shopping forays. I noticed a surprising number of young 20-something women not wearing masks, either. And, like the Bubbas, they were pretty lax on the social distancing, too. They all wandered around the store with a clueless look on their faces. It's as if they had never even been on a grocery run. Something tells me that might actually be the case with many of them.
MineralMan
(146,317 posts)So, I'm only seeing it during the morning hours. I typically go at 9 AM, when I can park pretty close to the store without any problem. Most people are observing proper distancing where I shop. Most people are wearing masks, and many are also wearing gloves.
I rarely find myself in any situation where I can't keep my distance from other shoppers at that hour.
GoCubsGo
(32,086 posts)Even without the crowds, there are always still at least a few slack-jawed, blank-staring knuckleheads in the store. As for masks, it depends on which stores I shop. Most of the shoppers at Kroger and Publix have been masked. In Aldi and Bi-Lo, maybe half. I do my best to keep away from others, but some make things difficult. I am seriously thinking of just restricting myself to pick-up at Kroger.

The coronavirus has laid bare just how strongly some male leaders value projecting a tough, macho image, even at the risk of contracting or spreading coronavirus. President Trump, a germaphobe known to hate shaking hands even in the best of times, ostentatiously continued to press the flesh well into March. Why? Its the same reason that Trump, in 2017, courted danger from a different corona, making a show of staring at the sun during an eclipse. Defying experts warnings about personal danger signals Im a tough guy, bring it on.

(4,890 posts)OT, but I liked to go camping a lot - before the pandemic. Small "c" camping - in a van.
Campground smoke is a problem for me. At peak season, the smoke sometimes gets so thick that you would call the cops on your neighbors if it happened in your neighborhood. No matter how big and fancy the motor coach extravanza, the first thing the guy does is build a big smoky fire. 20 feet from the next guys.
Some primeval instinct must kick in to protect the womenfolk and offspring from wild beasts, and to cook the meat from the big hunt that isn't going to happen. I've been in campgrounds where these families sit like bumps on logs in forest-fire like haze to "enjoy" the great outdoors.
These are probably guys who don't wear facemasks either.

Im sure theres SOME full-sized truck owners who are liberal most likely among the guys who really NEED a truck that size for their job but Ive personally never met ONE based on bumper stickers, or coworkers who drive them and later reveal their political thoughts.
Edit:
It gives them an opportunity to...
1. Flip the bird to the environment, associated in their minds with liberals;
2. Bully other drivers. (When I was driving a Prius, it was always a large truck that would tailgate me even if I was driving well over the speed limit.)

(296 posts)I live in Central Washington, an area known for being "conservative". That has been gradually changing but still a lot of freedumb rednecks in the area. I see the same thing here. People driving overly large pickups with gigantic tires on them and none of them wearing masks. Additionally they are typically the ones who drive like they own the road with no consideration for anyone else on the same highway. Goes with the type of personality that is attracted to these gas guzzling monsters.
Anyway, thankfully the governor of this state has been doing his job and has kept the state in stay at home status for a while and appears to be keeping it that way until the end of May at least.
We have more than our share of Covidiots around here demanding that they be allowed to go back to normal immediately. You can't talk sense to them. Logic doesn't work with brainless morons. They'll just come back with some ridiculous conspiracy theory and continue spewing their hate and stupidity.
I figure that eventually some of them will get their way in some states, maybe even mine. It won't change anything. Without a vaccine we'll just see the deaths in those areas begin to climb again as a result. Eventually, once again, the affected state will have to re enter lockdown or completely fall apart.
If this happens in your area I would advise you all to just continue wearing masks, stay at home, and ignore the urge to act like everything is normal. Its not and won't be until a vaccine is available. Tell all of your progressive friends to do the same. Lets be the ones that survive this pandemic. The way I see it these covidiots will basically be eliminating themselves from the planet. We may even go through a few cycles of reopening and closing. Doesn't matter, until there is a vaccine just continue on as we are staying at home and being careful.
I have the idea that Darwin basically got his theory of survival of the fittest backwards. Its not "survival of the fittest". It's really "departure of the dumbest". Let the "dumb" depart if they want. Stay smart and survive and we'll end up finally controlling the politics in this country. And that is perfectly fine by me.

(24,653 posts)Of all the people at the store only three did not have masks. A 20-30 something, a 40-50 something, and about a 70-something. All three of them ignored directional signs in the store, picked things up and put them back, and got right up next to other people.
One of them elbowed me aside to brush past me to get to an open checkout lane and another leaned over me to grab the divider when she got behind me in my lane.
All three were women. I wanted to scream.
