'Our patients are dropping like flies': 16,000 dead from COVID-19 in U.S. nursing homes

Under mounting public pressure to increase transparency, more states are now releasing information about the scourge of the coronavirus on nursing homes and long-term care facilities. The data paints a grim picture: more than 16,000 residents and staff have died, roughly a quarter of the nation’s overall deaths.

In Maryland, which released a list of facilities with positive cases for the first time this week, 97 residents are infected and 34 have died at the facility with the highest number of fatalities, Sagepoint Nursing and Rehabilitation. In New Jersey, where the virus has reached 86 percent of the state’s 575 long-term care facilities, outbreaks at two veterans’ homes have left 97 dead. In multiple states, including Kentucky, Colorado and Pennsylvania, more than half of the state’s fatalities are from nursing homes.

Two months after the first death from the virus in a U.S. nursing home, advocates and industry leaders say long-term care facilities still face a dire shortage of personal protective equipment and access to testing.

“More needs to be done. The number of deaths is appalling,” said Rhonda Richards, senior legislative representative at AARP. “We can’t overstate the gravity of this situation.”

and anywhere else that people are continuously in contact with each other - are experiencing horrendous numbers of deaths because of this bug.

I do NOT understand the reasoning behind so much resistance to social distancing, wearing of masks etc.

Are we not supposed to be the most intelligent creature on the planet?

What the f*** is wrong with us?

We are hosts. It transfers from host to host. It does that better in some conditions than others. It does well in crowded conditions. It can get past certain barriers but in small quantities. We can manipulate transmission variables to decrease likelihood of it moving from host to host.

Hosts don’t always have symptoms so we all have to act as though we might be hosts. We don’t yet know who is immune after having had the virus so we have to use barriers and sanitizers until we understand all this. We can slowly figure out how much barrier is necessary as we gauge what the exposure rate is under slightly more crowded conditions with barriers and sanitizing.

All that’s required is patience, care and doing your part rather than acting like you can’t—or won’t—put two and two together.
