... he said that due to the current economic situation, he is being forced to euthanize some of the hogs. What were his alternatives? Butcher them for meat? Much more humane!

(17,931 posts)but meat must be processed in USDA approved meat processing facilities if sold or given to the general public I know Cuomo in NY and Scott over here are working with processors to eliminate such awful waste from broken down supply chains. I hope Cooper in NC does the same. It's really not the farmers fault. He or she can't sell them and can't find feed for them. To the farmers it's a total loss.

(34,661 posts)Many of these hog operations are what is called Rentals and Feed Outs for hourly pay. Tons of Farmers are just care takers for mega Packer's. Meaning,they get paid rent for the Building and land as well as a wage to monitor the feeding and shipping operations. BTW,all the Pigs as well as the finishing feed a property of a Major Packer or Contractor with a supply agreement with a Packer for so many Finished Pigs per week or Month.
