I've noticed that quite a few men are grocery shopping. Never seen it before. They are wearing masks and wiping down the shopping carts! It is so good to see that everyone in the family is taking this virus seriously.

(2,343 posts)I'm making the runs to find items Walmart pickup has been unable to fill.
Guess we like the potential of danger!
I rarely go to the grocery store, unless I'm going to grill or fire up the smoker. I trust no one to pick out the meat!
I've noticed more men, too. They usually are staring intently into a crumpled list they've been sent with. At some point, the look up, and you can read the thought bubble above their head: "Now, where the hell would cherry extract be?" Happened to me!

(15,647 posts)I go to the supermarket. Nothing new for me or a number 0of men here. My wife has always done the cooking, I've always done the shopping (40+ years) -- it works well for us!

(10,885 posts)The regulars know where their needed items are located. The non-regulars are on their cell phones phoning home to "Honey" to get further instruction as to where their items are located, what might be substituted, or "Why do we need that anyway?".
This might be the only time men actually ask for directions! (Sorry Guys, an old trope, I know, but it kinda' fits.)
My older son does all the grocery shopping for his family, and always has. He enjoys it. He'll call each week to see if I need anything, but since he lives 20 minutes away, I hate to ask him to drop off a tomato or similar. I'm still working on my frozen and pantry stock - it's just fresh produce on my list now. I'll save his services for those times when I need heavy items moved or taken to the recycling center.

(15,647 posts)pretty much always enjoyed it myself. When our kids were little it was almost like personal time. And it always felt good to help my wife with the household - still does. Plus it takes care of my cant sit still energy.

I want to get in, fill the cart, and get out like I'm in a marathon, especially now that stores are limited to the number of shoppers allowed in at any given time.

Only grocery shopping every three weeks now instead of every one and a half to two.

(60,010 posts)Mr. Dixie shops, and does the same reading, I am all for it.
Actually, he has been shopping for quite awhile before the plague. I do the cooking and most housework.
He sez "family units" are returning to clog up the store aisles again, after an absence of about 2 weeks.
Lots of signs around that people are ready to get out of the house.

(30,754 posts)Quite often, when it is my husband's turn to go out, it is time for a grocery store run. I trust him more these days to get the right products. He is gaining experience.
Now that we are home more, he usually does the dishes. I do the cooking. We didn't have all our meals at home before the virus.

(1,586 posts)He is incredibly, almost overly conscientious about wiping everything down including himself. He is the only one that touches the bags, he wipes everything down and puts it all away. All myself and his housemate do is add things to the shopping list.
He also normally does all the shopping anyway because his housemate is agoraphobic and doesn't go to stores, but when I am visiting I used to run out for things. Not this time! LOL

(10,145 posts)I had surgery the week before the lockdown started here so he decided to do it the first weeks. I finally went shopping last week: it felt like a special treat to be out and talking face to face with another actual person! I'd guess about 2/3 of the shoppers were women.
Pre-plague, household shopping was done by whoever was going to be near our favorite grocery store that day.

(8,203 posts)cakes, ice cream, and candy filling the shopping bags..I always did the grocery shopping..until this crap happened - he is in his glory..with the pretense for doing the shopping so as to protect me..LOL..he did say passionately he doesn't want me to get sick...I believe him, 'cause if he doesn't, we have NO groceries..(mind you, it has been 37 years)
Anyway, I was feeling guilty this week, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer a year ago, finished radiation last Sept..9 weeks, 5 days a week..his PSA is coming down tremendously..but still, I feel his immunity has been compromised..so I ordered groceries, I went over for Pick up..first time..went rather well..
3 items not available..one being my attempt to get him his goodies, eclairs..don't worry,he has plenty of cake, cookies, and ice cream from his last swing through the aisles..Humor is our best friend...

(253 posts)He is shopping for you now in order to protect you. Apparently, you have been together for 37 years-it says a lot.
Hope all goes well and he recovers from prostate cancer.

(14,118 posts)Face it, men are expendable. They are soldiers and take risks that put them in harm's way.
I go out to shop. I'm an old guy and my son that lives with me is at-risk due to being overweight. He hasn't been outside our apartment for months now. I'm a man and that's what we do...

Men are not expendable. Mankind exists because of men like you. We are able to exist because of the sacrifices that men like you have made.

(5,641 posts)Since this started, I don't go in stores here in Houston, so I do pickup. I get most of the stuff I order so it works OK.
I also cook more often as well and do dishes and cleaning as much as possible. I don't work, so that helps keep me busy. I have to support my wife as much as I can. She works from home and anything I can do to ease her burden is a no brainer.
Blueplanet

(5,641 posts)My wife is Chinese and I have been cooking for her almost 27 years. I used my skills in the beginning to make Hot and Sour Soup and Egg Drop soup, I bought a Chinese cookbook and made sure she never went hungry. I think that may be why she married me, lol.
She took over cooking when I started working a lot back in the early 2000's, but now I am semi retired so I cook and clean for her as much as possible.
I also am starting to bake more. I made cakes for both my own and my son's birthday last month and I am making bread, rolls, etc.
I guess there is no hard and fast list of favorite dishes. Stir Fries are pretty easy to improvise and I am a pretty good at quick Asian sauces to enhance the dish.
Tonight, I am mixing it up, we are having roast chicken with baby gold potatoes and gravy with a salad and mug brownies for dessert.
Oh yea, I really like to do pulled pork in the Crock pot. it comes out really tender and has so many uses.
What about you? Favorites?

(253 posts)Marinated the roast - then baked the roast in a hot oven for about 30 minutes-lowered the temperature to 250 degrees and let the roast bake in the oven for about 2 hours. Medium rare. Seasoned rice. Delicious!

(10,145 posts)As of last week, meat, dairy, and produce were readily available (although meat is not cheap), but pastas, tomato sauces, and beans were pretty depleted. No bulk items at all, and weird shortages of other things. It didn't help that I hadn't been in that particular store in 2 months and they had re-arranged everything
