A few minutes later the blonde thing might come around to my attention. It's the gobs of make-up I notice after listening to what they have to say... though sometimes the make-up is so loud as to be the first thing.

It’s a type.

Someone has told them that "blondes have more fun", and they see blonde women getting more male attention". That'll do it.

There is one other reason, though.

When your hair goes gray, blonde is easier to maintain when it comes to dying your hair. You can touch up the roots, you can go a bit longer between dye jobs.

And PLEASE don't ask why women feel they need to dye their hair. There is rampant stereotyping of gray-haired women as incapable, and "too old". It is harder to get a job when you are a woman with gray hair. Hair dye-ing becomes a professional necessity.

Anecdotal evidence, look in any grocery store or pharmacy right now and you will see that women's hair color is selling out. Women who are used to going to the salon are trying to color their hair at home.
