He rode in on Obama's accomplishments and claimed them as his own. In order to try to pull that off, he did his best to criticize and defame Obama in order to detract from the source of why the economy was doing better when he "took over" as he put it.

If he were to praise or honor Obama's legacy, that would then point to the fact that Trump played a character who could beam and crow about it all being because of him. The game wouldn't work if that happened, especially for his gullible base who already might have been having prejudice issues, etc. It is they who would be most likely to buy into the rhetoric.

Now, we see that after actually having the hubris to take responsibility for something he didn't do, (in fact, he has accomplished the opposite all along) he now takes no responsibility for something he did do and that is to respond to the necessities that were evident at the dawn of COVID-19 and then to botch that all the way through while lowering morale, dragging everything into his gutter and, most of all, exposing his complete failure as a leader. You can't consider a full-time bully to be an example of leadership and Trump is proving that to be a fact.
