Snip: According to Capitol Fax, an influential political report that covers state politics, Chicago teachers have a strong majority of Chicagoans behind them, according to a new poll. Also, an overwhelming majority of Chicago parents with public school students support the strike, the poll found. And strong pluralities blame Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Conducted by We Ask America, the poll of 1,344 voting Chicago households asked, "In general, do you approve or disapprove of the Chicago Teachers Union's decision to go on strike?" 55.5 percent said they approved and 40 percent disapproved. Another 4 percent had no opinion. The poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent, according to Rich Miller, the reports publisher.
those with closest relation to reality on ground give the most support to strike - against delusional and destructive fantasies of alienated billionairs. How can that be???

(21,646 posts)Even before his election he looked bad for CTU and the children they educate and families they serve
Rahm Emanuel his campaign had nearly $12 million. A good chunk of those reserves came from the exact same people who donated over $3 million dollars to Stand 4 Children, the out-of-state organization responsible for the latest legislative attacks on the Chicago Teachers Union.
On education issues of importance to our members - from elected school board to an educator superintendent, etc. - he is out of touch and directly opposes the CTU's official positions.
Emanuel makes no secret of his intent to reduce our pensions, strip our bargaining rights, and greatly expand the presence of charter and turnaround schools throughout the city.
Emanuel has also supported efforts to impose merit pay and link teacher evaluation to test scores.

(62,325 posts)the issues the teachers had to use in order to strike in the first place.
They are part of the pushback against the privatization of public funds and the destruction of the Public School System. It's a lot bigger a cause than the basic issues that were used to initiate the strike.
I am just glad that more and more people are waking up to what is going on in this country regarding the takeover of all of its institutions by For-Profit Corporations.
