(3,631 posts)It's a nice design, and of course metaphysical woo but woo with thousands of years of tradition behind it, so why not. It's more solid than the science we get from the President, who thinks we should inject Clorox. And besides, it's pretty

Hey, it's as good a woo as any.

(34,093 posts)All the reports I get from people are that elastic is really painful on the ears. If elastic is uncomfortable, people will take the masks off.
My SIL, who works as a nurse in a prison (with NO PPE) has tried tons of different masks - and mine are the only ones that she can wear for 8 hours. She calls me nearly every day to tell me. I also made masks for my daughter's crew at Starbucks. A bunch had brought their own in - with elastic - and couldn't finish the shift. So I had an order for a second batch the next night. And - on the two occasions I have ventured out since this started - it's been extremely comfortable.
I've got 20 more to go, just waiting to have nose wires sewn in, and straps threaded.
My niece is an ICU nurse as was my sister that retired last year. My 93 year old mother was a nurse as was my grandmother.
My sister patterned them after masks used by nurses and doctors. Many have 1/4 inch elastic and can be used comfortably. The worst part of an 18 hour shift is the hot yellow raincoats they are forced to wear since PPE is unavailable.

(34,093 posts)It may be that the folks making homemade masks don't now how to attach the elastic, so that it isn't painful - but all but one of the people I've spoken with (lay and professional) have asked for straps becuase the elastic is too painful to wear for more than a brief period fo time.

(83,925 posts)Mine is not either. I don't wear them 18 hours a days like my niece however not uncomfortable at all.
My sister is making more, one for each is not enough. We are in this for a very long time.
Stay safe, George.

(67,782 posts)...has been wearing a mask for 4-5 months a year because she is allergic to flu shots (they say "no flu shot, you wear a mask" for several years. No problems.

(83,925 posts)I have no issues. Not that I go out much.
*sigh*
You kids stay safe. The world is a crazy place right now. Bright side you don't have to deal with any family trumpers! That is a plus.

And if it wasn't a frequent problem, there would't be dozens of articles like this:

(61,712 posts)I have a small head, and the child-size mask a friend made for me - with elastic loops for my ears - Fits the best. It's very comfortable for me.

(34,093 posts)It may be that most of the mask patterns dont attach them properly (or they aren't long enough). But I've only had one person (IRL) tell me the elastic was not painful.

Thanks.
Never thought it was given to me for that reason, just for the nurses and doctors that are the front line. Thanks so much for that brer.
TY~
