It sounds like a noble idea, but is it really possibile? I think we can fix a lot of the problem; for example, making sure nobody goes broke due to low wages or healthcare... but to completely eradicate it sounds unrealistic. How would that be achieved? The US government would have to become more authoritarian, regulating school performance, motivation, drug use, and lots of other issues that may factor into chronic poverty.

As long as Smiley isn't telling people not to vote for President Obama, I'm ok with what he is saying.

(18,530 posts)The things you name - school performance, motivation, drug use - these are all symptoms of poverty, not the causes. Cure poverty, cure these problems. Is it possible? Absolutely. All we have to do is make it a priority. This means, pay for it. We could, for example, cut defense spending in half, still have the best-funded military in the world and pay for almost anything we need, without any other cuts or additional regulations. There's no reason for poverty in America other than people intentionally keeping it.
