A large, dangerous typhoon has rapidly gained strength in the western Pacific. Super typhoon Sanba, positioned 690 miles south of Kadena Air Force base, Japan, has peak winds of 155 mph, the equivalent of strong category 4 hurricane, on the cusp of category 5.
The storm is headed due north, on a path to pass very near the island of Okinawa, Japan late Saturday or early Sunday local time. After that, the storm is forecast to continue due north towards the southern tip of South Korea Monday, although southern mainland Japan is within the range of possible tracks.
The major concern with this typhoon is its destructive intensity. Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) commentary describes a very symmetric system with a persistent eye surrounded by a thick ring of deep convection - readily apparent in satellite imagery.
Here's a hug for everyone in this monster's path

(12,017 posts)in less than a month...Typhoon Bolaven slammed Okinawa with 160+MPH back on 26AUG and was the strongest storm to hit the island in 50 years. Sanba will take a similar path and have similar winds...

(269,026 posts)This one is expected to lose some steam before reaching land, but what are the odds of being hit back to back with two such intense storms?
ProdigalJunkMail
(12,017 posts)Okinawa has a history of bad storms and they have adjusted their construction to deal with it (Bolaven caused no deaths on Okinawa despite the intensity of the storm). However, two, of this power, this close together? Seems a little ... unusual.
Hope all those in harms way get to safety!

(22,000 posts)This one could be a Cat 5. We got some remnants of Bolaven in Korea, but it wasn't near as bad as they thought it would be.

(22,000 posts)I live up in Seoul so the chance as we won't get much of it. Further down south in Pusan and Jeju Island they will have some terrible damage.

(269,026 posts)I see it's losing some strength as predicted

(12,017 posts)and hopefully before it gets to Busan it will be a Category 2 storm... not that a Cat2 is a whimpy storm or anything but so much better than a 156MPH whopper!

The winds are rising and heavy rain is lashing Okinawa, Japan where Category 3 Typhoon Sanba is expected to make landfall early Sunday morning local time (early this afternoon U.S. EDT.) Radar loops show that the large 35-mile diameter eye of Sanba is on a track that will bring it across the southern part of Okinawa, and heavy rains and wind gusts of 59 mph and 66 mph have been reported at Naha Airport and Kadena Air Force Base, respectively, over the past few hours. Moderate wind shear of 10 - 20 knots has weakened Sanba below its Category 5 peak on Friday morning, and satellite loops show that Sanba is weakening, with the cloud tops warming and the eyewall getting eroded on the west side, but Sanba should be able to maintain Category 3 strength as it crosses Okinawa today. Sanba will continue to weaken as it encounters cooler waters and higher wind shear between Okinawa and South Korea Saturday night and Sunday, and is likely to be at Category 1 strength at landfall in South Korea near 18 UTC on Sunday.

(46,436 posts)It looks awesome on my "Living Earth" app. The wind is just starting to pick up here, too, after being eerily still all morning.

(46,436 posts)It was very still this morning, but we're starting to get some pretty good gusts now (2:40 p.m.). I imagine it will be really roaring through here in five or six hours. I'll keep you posted. (I know how you love to storm watch. . )
